First word of advice: don’t ever use the words “fictional novel” together in a query letter. It drives agents and editors nuts because if you say it’s a novel, they already know it’s a piece of fiction.
Miss Snark, the anonymous New York literary agent/blogger, did a series of blog entries on this a few months back. People sent in their best efforts at synopses to her “Crap-o-meter” and got feedback. There’s a lot of good information in those archives.
