When writing a novel, if you need to mention other works, are there specific procedures you must follow?
I’m writing a novel and in the very beginning, in the prologue, I’m writing about the famous musical The King & I from Rodgers and Hammerstein and I wasn’t sure if there was some special procedure that I had to follow or if I was going to end up in trouble for talking about another novel within my original.

I’m pretty sure you need permission, but I don’t know the process you go through to get that permission.

If the novel is fiction, you don’t need to do anything, unless you’re taking quotes directly from the musical and putting them in your book. But if you’re just talking about it…..then you’re fine

I believe you need to include footnotes as well as a works cited page.

Just like any thing you copy or quote, you need a work cited or some way of showing that it’s not your work

well, if you can, tell about the musical, maybe right by it. but in any matter, you have to write a bibliography if you’re gonna put it up or go international or anything. but i take stuff from other things because i write stories on the internet all the time. in that case just find like a “memo” place and just tell your readers that a certain part is from something else. just note about where you got the information – in a book, or something. go to and there is a “performance” icon in the bibliography catagory choice, and you should beable to handle it from there. just write it down somewhere you can find it and put it in your book when you publish!!
