What is the name of this short story and its author?

I vaguely remember the plot of this short story that I once read in a collection of short stories by the same author. I don’t recall his name, but I seem to remember that he was a British author.
Plot: a man drives his car on a very busy urban motorway somewhere in England. He crashes over the edge and plummets down into median that is overgrown with weeds and bushes. The car disappears into this vegetation, thus nobody knows that he crashed. He is injured, broken leg, etc., so he is unable to climb out of this place. His food is whatever rubbish other passing drivers throw out their windows. He is stuck there alone, but ironically just feet away thousands of drivers pass him by. Along the way this crazy woman (who lives in some shack somewhere in this median) finds him and sort of takes him in. I can’t recall any more details.

The plot you have described does sound vaguely familiar, but I can’t recall where I read it.
The two best known British authors of this type of short stories I can recall would be Roald Dahl or Jeffery Archer. Can you find the story on a website about either of them?
