Patrick,
Not only is science fiction entertaining, but it helps to engage and grow the imaginations of particularly the children who watch.
One needs only to watch early episodes of Star Trek with their communicators and blackberry-like objects to see the vast impact that even one series in the genre had on human culture as a whole. If you were to ask many of todays actual engineers, why they chose engineering as a career, many of them claim to have been influenced as children or teens by “Scottie” the engineer from Star Trek.
In a world where children are told “it’s only real if we say it is”, science fiction offers a chance to dream and to brainstorm as well as to be entertained.

George Bernard Shaw once said:
“You see things and you say, Why? But I dream things that never were; and I say, Why Not?”
Science Fiction deals with things which at present are not possible but which we wish (or fear) one day might be possible.
Scientists have achieved things that would have seemed to be miraculous a few generations before us. These advances capture the imagination of humanity.
There are so many different types of Science Fiction that you should have read a few Science Fiction books and then quote from them to support your opinions when you answer this question.
