What do you look for in a romance, or science fiction?
The question is self-explainitory.

It doesn’t matter what genre you write, a reader always looks for characters they can care about (whether they are rooting for or against them). Characters make or break a story.
Other than that, I look for unique elements and a plot that hasn’t been done before (or a new twist on an old plot that makes it into something new).

Okay. So, to me, if someone dares to write a romance novel, it HAS to be a well planned out and ORIGINAL let me repeat, ORIGINAL story. It can’t just be another romance novel. It has to have something tied into it. An original conflict. Something that no other author has ever written before. Examples, stuff like war-romance novels are beautiful and touching, but unfortunately have become sort of a cliche topic. Another cliche topic; vampire romance/werewolf. Stuff like that I’m not even going to bother talking about.
And for science fiction, I find that since the fantasy is coming from your mind based off of what might be confusing to others, the story has to be easy to understand and not confusing to people who have no idea what the whole idea and place or time is.

Character development and flaws in the character. I would not like the object of affection to be perfect or even close to model quality.
Also, I would need to be able to identify with some of the characters.
None of the traits of the Cullens or other characters from Twilight.
