I would guess personal experience and whatever state of mind they may have. Depressed people write depressing things– happy people write happy things– et cetera, et cetera…
I failed creative writing because I was too self-conscious to turn anything in. Since then, I’ve stepped up to bat a little bit more and have started sharing my writings on a personal basis.
I guess the theory is, if you get student’s writing about things, they’ll open up some and talk about how they’re feeling. I guess importance goes into that some answer. Performance is on a person by person basis as well. No two student’s will ever write the same thing, even if they’re about the same thing. Vocabulary and grammatical structure are things one learns when they’re growing up, which is why everyone speaks in different ways. That’s just my idea of it though…

positive influence: letting child know that they can let their imagination run free.
The importance is in learning how to communicate properly and easily (putting two or more thoughts together and making it all make sense)

Granted, imagination plays a big part in creative writing; but also, such writing is influenced by life experiences, so those who are active in their lives, Will have more topics to ‘talk about’.
Also, the child’s understanding of; exposure to and use of basic language can affect their ability to write cohesively.
Creative writing plays an important part in school, because it can show the interest(s) of the child; it’s level of language use and comprehension and what things/people are influencing the child.
In later life, creative writing is recommended by some doctors, as a way for adults to relax.

Grammar, spelling and new subject matter is what I look for in Middle school. Look for the most developed answers as well.
