What are people’s views on novel writing?
I’m planning to write a novel. I’m steering towards horror fiction. I’m planning in writing about a kind of haunted/death house. I’m not sure whether to stick with this or simply do something completely different. What do people think?

the haunted/death house idea has been drained from movies and other novels.
you should think more abstractly to bring in a bigger audience

I LOVE writing. To me, haunted/death house is a little overdone, though, but if you keep it interesting, you’ll definitely have a future bestseller on your hands. As for if you should stick with it or not, it depends on your own personal feelings. If you want to, by all means, go ahead, writing is a very good and interesting profession. If you find writing becoming monotonous but you still want to write, i’d advise you to give that one a break and work on something else for a while and then you may find yourself wanting to go back to the other one.
Best of luck writing!

Write what you know best, what comes from yourself, what you can believe in the most. Genre, subject matter doesn’t really matter as long as your work is sincere. If you really believe in a haunted house, then write about it. If you are writing just to make money, the writing will come off as shallow.
Do what you feel is right for you

Don’t count on making any money from it. I’ve been writing for more than 10 years and am currently working on some original character stories I’d like to one day see published. But I don’t plan on actually making any money from them! If you have a passion, then keep going for it.
As for your novel idea, I agree that there’s lots and lots of haunted/death house stories out there already but that doesn’t mean yours won’t be better! So keep writing it! And always remember, you don’t need the whole world to love your story. There’s people out there that will absolutely love it!

I think that if you have to ask, you are not ready to write a novel. Writing is a craft, and a personal one. You don’t write because of other people’s opinions. You write because you feel you have something to say. Determine what it is you want to convey to the reader, and then write it. But it must be YOUR story. Writing is not a democracy. You don’t vote on a plot and then write it.

It’s hard, long work and the chances of getting published are remote. That said, I’m still trying, so good luck and carry on – but don’t expect the millions. Most first novels will earn the author less than £5000. Still there are worse hobbies.

if you can add originality to such an overused topic like that, i say go for it.

I’d say, think about it. I work at Borders and there are already far too many novels being published – the amount of returns we have to do to publishers is huge, because stuff just doesn’t sell. Sorry that this is a negative answer but I wish you luck anyway. It’s just something to remember.
