Resume Writing - Keep It Short And Concise

One of the main questions asked about resumes is, “Do I have to include everything on one page?” The most common misconception of resume writing is that your entire professional history has to fit within one A4 page of white paper.

The truth is, the resume should be well written and concise, and should promote your qualifications in the best possible light. This is sometimes impossible to do in one page. Thus, a resume can extend to multiple pages, with some consideration depending on your career level.

1.Be concise.

This is critical. Do not use lengthy sentences and paragraph forms to disclose your experience and your education. Employers want straight forward statements that highlight your qualifications. A resume is not a place to show your creative writing skills.

2.Perfect your resume.

You have second to catch your potential employer’s attention. Make sure that your resume is properly formatted, and you are not trying to fit too much copy on a single page of paper. Create appropriate and professional sections for your resume. Your potential employer is more concerned with the look and content of your resume than with its length.

3.Keep it short and focus

Longer is not better when you don’t have the experience to meet your career objective. If you are new to the job market, are changing careers, or you’ve only had one job, stick to a one page resume.

If you don’t have the experience to meet your career objective, no matter the reason, do not apologize for it. Don’t try to fill up your resume with irrelevant content; instead do your best to highlight your transferable skills, and stick to the short and sweet.

3.Do not exceed two pages

Unless you are applying for an executive-level job, or are composing curriculum vitae, your resume should not exceed two pages.

The purpose of a well-written resume is to sell you as the best candidate for the job with a confident and a straight-forward approach. Do not oversell your skills. Do not list more than three to five previous positions you’ve help.

Stick to those skills and experiences that best meet the job requirements and your career objective. The most relevant information has to be included on the first page.

The second page should be numbered, with your contact information included as well (just in case the pages are separated when printed, you don’t want your potential employer to discard the second page of your resume completely).

If you find yourself going over two pages, review your resume and make sure that you are not incorporating information that is irrelevant to your goals or to the position you are seeking.

4.Statements should be applicable to the job

Make sure that your professional history warrants a resume that is three pages or longer. As mentioned above, unless you are a senior- or executive-level professional, or you are composing curriculum vitae, your resume should not extend to over two pages.

If you have a longer resume, you will have to make sure that every statement on the resume is applicable to your career goals.

If you have had decades of leadership experience for example, demonstrate that using the reverse chronological resume style and only list those jobs that best qualify you for the position you are seeking. If you need to include an extensive list of publications or certifications, your resume can take up more than three pages.

Make sure that the important information is still listed on the first page. This includes your career objective and professional profile, and your current or most recent professional experience. All subsequent pages need to be numbered, and include your contact information in the heading.

Conquering Writers Block - The Subtle Art

If you’re involved in any type of article writing online or off you have undoubtedly encountered various episodes of writers block. Ugh!

You know the feeling. Your thought process comes to a screeching halt. It almost seems like a form of ‘mental quicksand’ the harder you try to produce an intelligent verse the harder it gets.

Well what can we do ‘pre-empt’ these periodic attacks on our writing skills?

Let’s examine some of the common reasons we all suffer from these disruptions in our article writing efforts.

• Coming up empty when trying to compose the opening line.

• The inability to maintain concentration

• Not doing your ‘homework’ when preparing to write an article. You will find that this is usually the core of the problem.

• Spending too much time ‘getting ready to get ready’! Our own over analysis clearly indicates doubt. This doubt or fear is normal assuming you don’t want your writing skills or content to be criticized by everyone who reads your work. Also this point towards a lack of preparation and indicates more work needs to be done in the area of article research.

• Trying to edit your work as you are composing. This is a great way to disrupt your concentration.

• Procrastination is often the most common obstacle you will face.  This again finds it roots in the lack of preparation. If you’re not sure what it is to be done we naturally stall as much because of this indecisiveness.

Now we need to determine exactly how to resolve and banished these issues that impede our progress and turn a simple task into a nightmare.

Here we’ll find that ‘taking action’ most times is all that’s required to get you moving forward again.

Here are some writing tips that will help get you over the hump and back on track:

• Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the opening sentence. If it comes to you great, if not move on. When you write an article you should have a good grasp of the subject matter. Compose those areas of the article that come quickest to you and address the opening sentence later if need be.

• The proper article research will often allow you to smoothly compose your article with little hesitation. Be sure to set aside the time needed and a quiet environment in which to write an article.

• Let your thoughts flow and record them as they do. You can and should set aside a ’separate’ time to edit your composition. Later when editing you can ’smooth’ over any grammatical errors and ‘polish’ up your delivery. You will save a lot of time by doing this and it will make both your composing and editing that much easier.

• Multi-tasking may serve a purpose in areas that don’t require concentration but when article writing this is NOT the case. Separating your research, your writing and your editing is always highly recommended. This allows for a continuity of thought in the particular area you are focusing on and cuts down on both time and frustration.

Writers block is a common nemesis that can be defeated with the proper preparation and discipline. By following these aforementioned writing tips you should be able to avoid the mental paralysis that occasionally strikes all writers. This in turn will greatly reduce the time it takes you to compose the article. Your preparation will result in you being able to continually progress through the various stages of your article writing. In the end this will help prevent your thoughts from becoming disrupted and slowing your progress to a standstill!

Self-publishing Creative Writing Anthologies at School

As any parent or high school teacher already knows, high school students can be hard to motivate. While it is true that some teens love to write , it’s fair to say that most of them would prefer not to. As educators, we know that the only way to become a better writer is to practice writing. The problem with most high school writing assignments is that they lack relevance for students. They are more concerned with getting the right answer than they are about developing their writing skills and pushing themselves to hone their verbal prowess. At the same time, they do seem to show more interest in the work of their peers than they do in the works of literature in their textbooks.

After spending months and months teaching your students the hallmarks of good writing, a great way to spark some interest in writing is to self-publish an anthology of creative writing at your school. As you approach this publication project, there are a few things you should consider.

Some teens love attention and thrive on competition. Others prefer to silently participate. If you structure the publication project correctly, both types of students will be interested in working on the publication. Let students know that everyone who submits their pieces by the early bird deadline will definitely have at least one piece selected for publication. In addition to including all writers who submit early, hold a competition for the best pieces. Offer simple prizes for first, second, and third places in different categories. You can select categories based on the anticipated scope of the publication project. For small schools, choose broad categories such as poetry, prose, etc. For larger schools, you can choose more specific categories such as sonnets, descriptive paragraphs, and the like. You may also want to expand the project to include art. In doing so, you can also likely get the art staff to help you lay out and design the final publication.

Set your deadlines for submission and decide on other critical dates. You should assemble a team of students who can help you type and edit the submissions as they come in. You will want to develop a style guide and train the students to follow it. Establish a directory and a procedure and rules for saving and accessing the typed submissions. The more thought you put into the process at the beginning, the more smoothly your publication will come together later.

As you and your team put together the files and make design decisions, you need to order the supplies required to physically assemble the anthology. Before you order supplies, think about the size of the final document and how many copies you plan to distribute. You should think about offering complimentary copies to winners and to your publications team. Others can buy the publication for a nominal fee. Once you’ve run the numbers, order the paper, ink or toner, and binding supplies. Depending on how you choose to bind the publication, you will need to order different supplies.

Once you have the document print-ready, it’s time to assemble. Again, this is a chance to get students involved. They like to help with office tasks they are not accustomed to doing, so it shouldn’t be too hard to get some help. Once the documents are assembled, work with your administration to recognize the winning students. You can put their names on a sign or bulletin board or even recognize them at a school assembly. Once the word gets out, other students and their families will be calling the school to purchase copies of the book.

It’s not difficult to self-publish a school anthology if you are organized. Plan ahead and enjoy seeing your students develop a sense of pride in their writing as they share it with their classmates and their families. There is something magical about seeing one’s own words preserved in a bound publication like a school anthology. It is an experience they will carry with them throughout their lives.
