When most people think of Writers Block, what comes to mind is usually basic information that’s not particularly interesting or beneficial. But there’s a lot more to Writers Block than just the basics.
What is writer’s block? Well, I just can’t think of a single darn thing to say. Oh well, I’m outta here! Sound familiar? No! Oh, get real! We’ve all experienced this phenomenon when we absolutely have to write something, particularly on deadline. I’m talking about uh, I can’t think of what the word is, oh, yes, it’s on the tip of my tongue, it’s: WRITER’S BLOCK!!!! Whew! I feel better just getting that out of my head and onto the page!
Writer’s block is the patron demon of the blank page. You may think you know EXACTLY what you’re going to write, but as soon as that evil white screen appears before you, your mind suddenly goes completely blank. I’m not talking about Zen meditation stare-at-the-wall-until-enlightenment-hits kind of blank. I’m talking about sweat trickling down the back of your neck, anguish and panic and suffering kind of blank. The tighter the deadline, the worse the anguish of writer’s block gets.
Having said that, let me say it again. “The tighter the deadline, the worse the anguish of writer’s block gets.” Now, can you figure out what might possibly be causing this horrible plunge into speechlessness? The answer is obvious: FEAR! You are terrified of that blank page. You are terrified you have absolutely nothing of value to say. You are afraid of the fear of writer’s block itself!
It does not necessarily matter if you’ve done a decade of research and all you have to do is string sentences you can repeat in your sleep together into coherent paragraphs. Writer’s block can strike anyone at any time. Based in fear, it raises our doubts about our own self-worth, but it’s sneaky. It’s writer’s block, after all, so it doesn’t just come and let you know that. No, it makes you feel like an idiot who just had your frontal lobes removed through your sinuses.
If you dared to put forth words into the greater world, they would surely come out as gibberish! Let’s try and be rational with this irrational demon. Let’s make a list of what might possibly be beneath this terrible and terrifying condition. 1. Perfectionism. You must absolutely produce a masterpiece of literature straight off in the first draft. Otherwise, you qualify as a complete failure. 2. Editing instead of composing. There’s your monkey-mind sitting on your shoulder, yelling as soon as you type “I was born?,” no, not that, that’s wrong! That’s stupid! Correct correct correct correct? 3. Self-consciousness. How can you think, let alone write, when all you can manage to do is pry the fingers of writer’s block away from your throat enough so you can gasp in a few shallow breaths? You’re not focusing on what you’re trying to write, your focusing on those gnarly fingers around your windpipe. 4. Can’t get started. It’s always the first sentence that’s the hardest. As writers, we all know how EXTREMELY important the first sentence is. It must be brilliant! It must be unique! It must hook your reader’s from the start! There’s no way we can get into writing the piece until we get past this impossible first sentence. 5. Shattered concentration. You’re cat is sick. You suspect your mate is cheating on you. Your electricity might be turned off any second. You have a crush on the local UPS deliveryman. You have a dinner party planned for your in-laws. You . . . Need I say more.
How can you possibly concentrate with all this mental clutter? I trust that what you’ve read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain. 6. Procrastination. It’s your favorite hobby. It’s your soul mate. It?s the reason you’ve knitted 60 argyle sweaters or made 300 bookcases in your garage workshop. It’s the reason you never run out of Brie. FACE IT ? IT?S ONE OF THE REASONS YOU HAVE WRITER’S BLOCK!
How to Overcome Writer’s Block Okay. I can hear that herd of you running away from this article as fast as you can. Absurd! you huff. Never in a million years, you fume. Writer’s block is absolutely, undeniably, scientifically proven to be impossible to overcome. Oh, just get over it! Well, I guess it’s not that easy. So try to sit down for just a few minutes and listen. All you have to do is listen? You don’t have to actually write a single word.
Ah, there you all are again. I am beginning to make you out now that the cloud of dust is settling. I am here to tell you that WRITER’S BLOCK CAN BE OVERCOME. Please, remain seated. There are ways to trick this nasty demon. Pick one, pick several, and give them a try. Soon, before you even have a chance for your heartbeat to accelerate, guess what? You’re writing. Here are some tried and true methods of overcoming writer’s block: 1. Be prepared. The only thing to fear is fear itself. (I know, that’s a clich?but as soon as you start writing, feel free to improve on it.) If you spend some time mulling over your project before you actually sit down to write, you may be able to circumvent the worst of the crippling panic. 2. Forget perfectionism. No one ever writes a masterpiece in the first draft. Don’t put any expectations on your writing at all! In fact, tell yourself you’re going to write absolute garbage, and then give yourself permission to happily stink up your writing room. 3. Compose instead of editing. Never, never write your first draft with your monkey-mind sitting on your shoulder making snide editorial comments. Composing is a magical process. It surpasses the conscious mind by galaxies. It’s even incomprehensible to the conscious, editorial, monkey-mind.
So prepare an ambush. Sit down at your computer or your desk. Take a deep breath and blow out all your thoughts. Let your finger hover over your keyboard or pick up your pen. And then pull a fake: appear to be about to begin to write, but instead, using your thumb and index finger of your dominant hand, flick that little annoying ugly monkey back into the barrel of laughs it came from. Then jump in ? quickly!
Write, scribble, scream, howl, let everything loose, as long as you do it with a pen or your computer keyboard. 4. Forget the first sentence. You can sweat over that all-important one-liner when you’ve finished your piece. Skip it! Go for the middle or even the end. Start wherever you can. Chances are, when you read it over, the first line will be blinking its little neon lights right at you from the depths of your composition. 5. Concentration. This is a hard one. Life throws us so many curve balls. How about thinking about your writing time as a little vacation from all those annoying worries. Banish them! Create a space, perhaps even a physical one, where nothing exists except the single present moment. If one of those irritating worries gets by you, stomp on it like you would an ugly bug! 6. Stop procrastinating. Write an outline. Keep your research notes within sight. Use someone else’s writing to get going. Babble incoherently on paper or on the computer if you have to. Just do it! (I know, I stole that line from somewhere?). Tack up anything that could possibly help you to get going: notes, outlines, pictures of your grandmother. Put the cookie you will be allowed to eat when you finish your first draft within sight ? but out of reach. Then pick up the same type of writing that you need to write, and read it. Then read it again.
Soon, trust me, the fear will slowly fade away. As soon as it does, grab your keyboard ? and get writing! Now you can be a confident expert on Writers Block. OK, maybe not an expert. But you should have something to bring to the table next time you join a discussion on Writers Block.

Sometimes writers block comes because we’re really not happy with the way our story is progressing. Maybe it’s too obvious. Perhaps it just doesn’t feel like it’s coming out the way you imagine it. Or maybe it just doesn’t have that special spark and just kind of lays there on the page like a bad hairball.
One of the best ways to get around this kind of writers block is to do a bit of brainstorming on paper. In this exercise you’re simply noodling on paper, so you don’t have to worry about getting anything right. (For those who don’t know, noodling is something jazz musicians do when they’re just messing around and trying things out.)
Start by writing down what’s going on in your story up to the point where you’re stuck.
Now write down any ideas of what should be happening in the scene you’re stuck on. You don’t have to write in complete sentences. It can be just a few words or scribbled notes. Just as long as the jist of the scene is there.
It could look something like: “So far, [a couple of words about what has led up to this point.] So now Jane is planning on doing X.” Or “Sue really needs Bob to do Y.” Maybe Jane is going to pick something up at the store. Or maybe Sue is going to meet Bob at a restaurant in order to persuade him to do something.
What this does is remind your muse what’s going on and brings your imagination up to speed.
Now write down the actions your character needs to take in this particular scene, why and what needs to happen as a result. In other words, what does your character want to happen as a result of the action she takes in this scene?
Now write down ten different ways the scene could go.
It doesn’t matter if some of them are wild and crazy and really out there, or even if you’re never going to use any of those ideas. What matters is getting creative with your story ideas. What usually happens is that you’ll end up coming up with a much more interesting way the scene could play out and that will get you excited about your story again. Chances are you’ll also create new depth in that scene and make your story richer and much more interesting.
You might even come up with ideas you can use in other scenes or even a whole new subplot. Which means it will be a better read for your audience and a better write for you.
It’s important not to censor yourself here. Remember, you’re just coming up with alternatives and ideas. It’s like playing in the sandbox.

Writing a novel is not a quick afternoon job, it’s a long and often emotionally challenging business. You need to move steadily and methodically along your novel writing journey if you’re going to bring your story to its happy completion.
Some good advice I once received about tackling a large job is to break it down into smaller pieces and then complete each piece in the correct order.
Here is a method for creating a synopsis that does just that.
Stage 1. In two or three brief paragraphs state the broad outline of the whole story.
Example:
The scene is set in Italy where the son and daughter of two warring families meet at a ball and fall in love.
The daughter is being forced to marry another man, but says she will kill herself rather than marry him. She takes a sleeping draught which makes her appear dead.
The son finds her in this state and, distraught, takes his own life with his dagger. The daughter wakes up to find her love dead beside her and kills herself with the same dagger.
Stage 2. Expand this scenario, but this time describe each chapter in two or three brief sentences.
Example:
Chapter 1
The Montagues and the Capulets are two important families in Verona but they hate each other. Juliet is betrothed to a man called Paris, and the wedding arrangements are being made.
Romeo, having declared he is in love with Rosaline, goes to the ball for a chance to meet her. At the ball he meets Juliet and they both fall in love.
Afterwards they discover that their families have a standing feud.
Stage 3. Having got your chapter by chapter synopsis done, expand each one from two or three sentences to a more detailed account of the action in that chapter. Don’t include dialogue or descriptions at this stage unless absolutely necessary. A chapter may well take up a page or more now, but don’t let your enthusiasm run away with you.
Stage 4. Using your expanded chapter summaries begin writing the novel proper. You may find that the story wants to strike out at a tangent. Be careful of this as, if you’ve got a really cracking story already, you risk destroying it.
If you do find yourself going off on an exciting new storyline then stop before you get too far and go back to Stage 1. Write down your changed story in two or three brief paragraphs to see how it looks and to judge whether you’re really happy with it. If you are then go back to Stages 2 and 3 and rework them before continuing with the chapter by chapter work.
Follow this system carefully and you will have created a sure road map to follow that will lead you to your final goal: your completed manuscript.

I love writing all kinds of stories and seem to be good with it, but now lately, I don’t know, I just struggle to write. I know a writers block is when you don’t have ideas for your story, but the problem is that I have all the ideas, I know exactly where I want the story to go, I just can’t seem to get it onto paper. I keep starting over and over all the time… my sentences just doesn’t seem to flow like it always has.
I know all writers gets a writers block every now and then, but does this also happen to you sometimes that you know what to write, you just don’t know how?

For me, writers’ block was a blank page on the screen of my mind. Nothing would come. No thought patterns appeared. The little voice in my head was silent. The tighter the deadline, the more frustrated I became. Oh, I wrote anyway but it was amateurish at best.
My mentor nailed the problem. It was fear!
Writers’ block can be from deep-seated fear that you have absolutely nothing of value to say. And, it doesn’t matter if you’ve done all your research and all you have to do is arrange sentences together into coherent paragraphs. Writers’ block, based on fear of looking stupid, can strike anyone at any time.
Based in fear, it raises our doubts about our own self-worth and it’s usually hidden from our consciousness. You don’t realize the fear is there but you feel like an idiot who only went up to the 4th grade in school. If you dared publish your writing, people would surely see you for the illiterate idiot you really are!
Here is a list to use to unmask the writer’s block demon in you!

Midway through your first or second sentences the demon says – “No, that’s stupid. Start over!” “Uh…that’s no good either…uh…”

The demon convinces you that the first sentence is the hardest and reminds you of how critically important the first sentence is. It must be brilliant! It must be unique! It must hook your reader from the start! Scary, huh?
5. Shattered concentration.
The demon will draw your attention away from your keyboard by planting random thoughts – “Did I pay the electric bill?”, “I wish Jane was here right now,” “What time is it?” and on it goes.
6. Procrastination.
The demon tells you it’s O.K. to walk away for a while, to avoid the hassle right now, writing can be put off while you clear your head. Procrastination is writers’ block out in the open for you to see. When procrastination takes over, you have lost the battle.
Now that I have your stomach churning, here is what my mentor taught me.
1. Be prepared.
Once your research is done, spend a few minutes picturing in your mind’s eye the story you are about to put on paper. Play it like a movie with sound and action. Imagine you are a movie critic and you are about to write a column about the movie.
I would have news stories mostly written in my mind before I reached the TV station using this very technique. I knew how I would begin, what the middle would be about, and how it would end. This, by the way, included cover video and sound-on interviews.
2. Forget perfectionism.
Start writing regardless of what you think about your skill as a writer. Just write, one sentence after another after another. Let it flow. Some of it will be garbage, sure, but so what? The final product is what counts.
Look at it this way. Most of your readers/viewers are no smarter than you. Most have an average education. Most wouldn’t know a perfect story from an imperfect one. Most cannot recognize improper grammar. This alone should free you to write but let’s continue.
3. Compose instead of editing.
Composing is a magical process. It surpasses the conscious mind and kicks on your creative flow because it doesn’t judge quality. It only cares about quantity at this point. It totally ignores the writer’s block demon! It doesn’t care what anyone thinks. It just wants to write!
4. Forget the first sentence.
In fact, expect to throw away the first couple of sentences. That way the demon gets what it wants and you get what you want – to write! You can sweat over that all-important headline and opening paragraph when you’ve finished your piece.
5. Concentration.
Distraction is another sign that the writer’s block demon is rearing its ugly head. Concentration is the 357 magnum that blows it away. Pretend you’re Dirty Harry and use concentration to blow that sucker away.
6. Stop procrastinating.
If you suffer with procrastination in many areas of your life, you need to begin your writing process by writing an outline, a road map to get you from the beginning to the middle to the end of the piece. Keep your research notes handy as a crutch. You can try writing with pad and pencil at first just to get just to break the mental block between your keyboard and the blank page of your mind. Writing in this way may help you get organized. Of course you can always just attack your keyboard to get the flow started. Type anything and everything that come into your head!
Finally, one of the keys I employed when I first began my battle to overcome writers’ block was to keep a picture in my mind of my mentor teaching these shortcuts. For you, may I suggest you print this article and keep it next to your keyboard where you can refer to it often. Allow it to be your mentor. I guarantee, someday you will not need it because writers’ block will be a rare occurrence.

As your clients interact with you, you’ll likely get the same kinds of questions over and over. Take one or two of your most frequently asked questions and answer it in an article.
3. Use a Client’s Scenario
Protecting your client’s privacy (or not, if they give you permission), use their scenario as a case study. Explain the client’s situation and what recommendations you gave, as well as what the results were. This will help build your credibility in your prospect’s eyes as well, as this gives them the chance to see you “at work.”
4. Comb Through Your Reading Box
Do you have a Reading Box (or tray, file, pile)? If you’re like me, I get a ton of info via email everyday that I really do want to read, so I have a box where I toss all the stuff I print into (actually, it’s now two boxes!). Go through your own pile, and see what ideas pop up for you from there. (I do this often when I’m trying to switch from mommy-mode to businesswoman-mode.)
5. Learn Something New and Pass It Along
Did you learn something new recently that you can share with others? Or is there something you want to learn more about? Go and do some preliminary research and share your findings with your readers.
6. Interview an Expert
I love this one, but don’t overdo it. Your readers want to hear from you, which is why they are reading YOUR ezine. But once in awhile, having an interview as an article, as long as it provides valuable content for your readers, can be a nice change and even fun.

7. Get Back to Basics
Think back to when you were just starting out in your business. What were the things you found most challenging? Choose one or two and offer your advice on how to get beyond those stumbling blocks.
