There are many contests out there that have different subject matter. If you have already written something you can submit it to a contest. Imagine to yourself what magazine you would like to see your work in. Who would you like to work with if they made your story into a movie and what you will wear to an award show? All of these help you envision what you want for your writing and for your goals. Your list will be your own but you know what I mean.
If your work is good and you enter enough short story contests your work will be seen and you can get published and work toward the eventual goal of being a successful published writer. But it all starts with the basic thing that all writers know. You have to keep writing no matter what.
