What are some good short stories about wilderness survival appropriate for 7th graders?

I’m teaching a unit on survival surrounding Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. We’re focusing on the idea of primordial instinct and the questionably immoral things that people and animals do when survival instincts kick in. We’re also talking about which of those things we consider excusable and inexcusable and why.

I’m looking for short stories (preferably fiction rather than totally true personal narratives) that focus on these themes. Ideally, I’d like to have them read something that isn’t about the cold — maybe something about a desert, ocean, or tropical location would work better.

Any ideas?

BRAVO TWO ZERO.FACT OR FICTION/ military?

did it happen as described by andy Mcnab or was it made up ?later books alledge it was a cover up to explain away andy Mcnabs mistakes, your thoughts on this/
fact, michael asher(ex-para/sas) retraced the route taken by Mcnab across the desert during his escape,at various points along the way he found locals who were there when Mcnab passed by and their version of events differ from Mcnabs to the point that it appeared to refute Mcnabs account,he(asher) then wrote the book(the real bravo two zero} and it was turned into a t.v.documentery which is when bells started ringing in hereford, end of fact,it is a matter of record that Mcnab turned down advice from senior members of the regiment in his planning of the operation and was in discord with membersof his own patrol so why was this patrol allowed to carry on,i know he had the command decision overall but was this really in the best interests of the regiment?
