The Career Novelist: A Literary Agent Offers Strategies for Success

Product Description
The Career Novelist is like having your own personal literary agent on your bookshelf!

What career to write about for an iambic pentameter and how?

I have to write an iambic pentameter about a career like it is my own job, kind of like the pilgrims in Canterbury Tales. I am not sure how to get started. I am absolutely terrible at ANY kind of poetry. I have not yet though of a career to write about. Help? :)

How do I develop a short story?

What I wish to do is this: I wish to develop a plot for my short story from a raw idea, while developing it gradually, adding ONE subplot (so as to make it short, but interesting), and developing my characters, but most of all, I wish to have a jolly good time doing it, without thinking of the amount of responsibility I must take in order for it to be a career. I already know that it is a great responsibility, but I do not wish to think in those terms, for it shall only spoil my fun, and make it so that I am not motivated to do it for the long term.

I Also wish to do it using only a notebook and pen, for it is all I have at my disposal.

Would a college degree in Psychology hinder getting your fantasy fiction work published?

I know a college degree doesn’t hurt anything if you want to go into a specific field, but as an semi-experienced writer who is unpublished, will a degree in the wrong area actually hurt my chances of getting published? Will I be dismissed as unknowledgeable because I am “absorbed in one area”?
I wanted to know because a bunch of people are posting questions about “do I need a college degree to be published?” and a lot of the answers were “college helps, take english, get an english degree, take writing classes”. So I was just wondering if a degree not centering around english, writing, or creative writing might actually detract from someone’s qualifications. A degree is very time-consuming, and so is a fulltime career (I hope to be a counselor). So, that might actually backfire. I was checking on the probability of backfiring, as I am toying with the idea of getting published.

I’m thinking about writing a novel?

I’ve just recently come to this idea, so it’s in no way concrete. I want to focus most of my effort on this novel because I know it’s difficult to get published as a first time author, and if I do well, I might make it into a career. Are there any published authors out there that can give me some hints or tips to send me in the right direction? What are my chances of getting published with a well written book? Is there any chance of me making money off of it?

Where are some good low residency MFA in creative writing programs?

I am about to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and I’m thinking about getting my Masters. However, I’m not sure if I want to continue in a traditional classroom setting because I need to begin working toward a career. What are some good low-residency MFA creative writing programs?

What can a young writer do after writing a novel?

How do you go about becoming a serious writer, especially when at a young age? I’m very interested in going into the field, and everyone has to start somewhere… The problem is, I don’t know what to do after I finish something. I don’t know what competitions would be rewarding, or what kind of programs could help me in pursuing a career.

How can I improve my creative writing skills?

I am 13 and write the scripts for the school’s plays, write stories and film mini documentaries. I want to become a creative writer for WWE (writing the storylines). I know I will have to work for other TV productions before joining the WWE corporate. How can I improve my creative writing skills so that I can be successful in my career?
