What is the name of the historical fiction book about the bomb?

Me and my dad have been trying to think of the title or author of a book we read years ago. It was historical fiction about a boy during the first world war who lived with his dad. His dad was a scientist working on whatever bomb (atomic or nuclear I can’t remember) they were building in New Mexico. At the beginning of the book the boy’s friend falls off a building and dies. The boy becomes friends with a kid who’s parents are Russian spies… their attack dogs come after the boy at one point and there is a man who gets seriously injured from all the radiation and gives the boy a pair of sunglasses, telling him the bomb is “the sun” and he should stay as far away from it as he can.
Anyone remember reading this book and can give me some clues as to the author or title?

Does anyone want this short piece of fiction for their book?

The fuel delivery driver pulled into a busy terminal, the lot was full of travelers, their vehicles were lined at the pumps when an explosion could be seen from miles away. The bomb splattered his blood first, and then his truck, tearing an instant gash into the metal container lighting the spilled fuel as it spread across all those vehicles, flames everywhere. One vehicle escaped the inferno by refusing to stay there, trapped and burned alive. The father drove the family through a barrier of flames, the rubber on the tires were burning to. He managed to drive through a small opening of vehicles out into a safe place not far from the terminal. He has divine guidance, his family saved.

Im writing a short story and it suppose to be 500 words, how or what can I do to keep it short?

I always write over 500 words and well every time I try to fix it up it doesn’t make sense.

Im writing a ss about a young girl in the war who is trapped under a tree from a bomb falling and she goes unconcious, while she lay there dying she starts imagining the fairies has come to her.
In other words the fairies is a form of death.

Problem is I can’t keep it short.
