Notable Short fiction magazines?
I’m a starting writer and I just learned that if I want to get published I should start by send short fiction to webzines, magazines, and publications that publish short fiction. What are the names of some notable short fiction magazines. (and if you can include their contact info for submissions that’d help, but if you don’t know it don’t sweat =)

You’re correct – it’s wise to start out with getting short stories published in magazines. This is (slightly) easier than getting a novel published, and once you’ve had a few short stories published it’s much easier to get an agent or editor to take a look at your first novel.
To find plenty of great magazines, go to and search by genre to find magazines that are currently accepting submissions of the type of story you’ve written. Make sure you read each magazine’s submission guidelines carefully and follow them to the letter!

I don’t really know (sorry), but I would be concerned with protecting my material. I’m not sure if one obtains a copyright for each piece or how that works.

In addition to the excellent duotrope, get a recent edition of Writer’s Market, or subscribe online. Your library probably has an out of date copy which contains scads of information which is still accurate. You can get magazine names well suited for your work and the URL of each, so you can check their current writers’ guidelines before submitting.
