Is there an online market for short stories?

I’m looking to place short fiction stories online-a good audience would is what I’m realistically looking for so any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Unfortunately any site claiming to do this for you is probably just trying to take your money for “services” of very questionable worth. The only way to do it is the old fashioned way, sending literally hundreds of writing samples and query letters to publishers across the country until one is drunk or lazy enough to say “yes!”
Good luck. You can easily start your own website these days with your stories on it as samples, or probably for paid downloads, but I wouldn’t expect to ge rich at it. (It would be lots of fun though!)

Yes. Look at this Google search.

Actually, there are many reputable online zines that publish short fiction. Try Duotrope.com. They have a fairly extensive list of online and paper publishers. You also might want to look at the Spicygreeniguana.com.

It used to be that online publishing was mostly scams, but with the advancement of technology, more and more magazines are putting out online versions or simply abandoning print media for online media. You still have to be careful, though. Just do your research and you can avoid the scams. If the magazine or publishing company wants you to pay them, it’s not on the up and up. Likewise, if the deal sounds too good to be true, it is.

Contests are a little differen, however. There is usually an entry fee for them, so paying the publisher is not an indicator of fraud. What you need to look at there is the cost of the entry fee. Most of the good ones require less than $30 to enter. Also, it helps to investigate the publication they are supposedly running the contest for.
