Is It possible to travel faster than the speed of light?
Or is this just science fiction? What are some theories on this?

As far as we can tell, no.
There are theories that it may be possible to warp space/time itself to create a “wave” that propels you along at faster than lightspeed. But it doesn’t appear to be possible to create funny geometries like that with distributions of normal mass. But there is good reason to believe that early in the history of the universe, space was expanding at much faster than lightspeed due to some mechanism we don’t really understand. So who knows really.

Yes it is.
Black Holes suck up light.. so its faster.
And wormholes that take you to the other side of the galaxy in quick seconds or.. just faster than the speed of light.
Dunno if later in the future mankind of other species will or have made a machine or have technology that goes faster.

No, it’s not possible for any mass to move through space *at* the speed of light, to say nothing of going faster. To even accelerate some thing up to the speed of light would literally require all the energy in the universe.

It is not possible to travel faster than c (about 3×10^8m/s), the speed of light in a vacuum.
However, in different media (air, water etc) the speed of light is LESS than c, and so some things (e.g. neutrinos, electrons) ARE able to travel faster than the light in that specific medium. When this occurs, a special kind of radiation called Cerenkov radiation which gives an eerie blue glow.

The theory of relativity says no. The idea of wormholes where space is so distorted that you bypass the straight line which is actually curved has been proposed many times. No scientific evidence that this is possible at this time. There are several books at most libraries that you might like to read if you are really interested. Look for Kip Thorne’s book and of course A Brief History of Time. by Stephen Hawking

No it’s not. However this is not like the sound barrier in which it has a certain calculated speed. When you get going that fast time and distance become mixed in one and it become VERY complicated. That’s what Quantum Physics is. There are a number of explanations on the web so do a search for it if you’re interested.

If one were able to move information or matter from one point to another faster than light, then according to special relativity, there would be some inertial frame of reference in which the signal or object was moving backwards in time. This is a consequence of the relativity of simultaneity in special relativity, which says that in some cases different reference frames will disagree on whether two events at different locations happened “at the same time” or not, and they can also disagree on the order of the two events (technically, these disagreements occur when spacetime interval between the events is ’space-like’, meaning that neither event lies in the future light cone of the other).[17] If one of the two events represents the sending of a signal from one location and the second event represents the reception of the same signal at another location, then as long as the signal is moving at the speed of light or slower, the mathematics of simultaneity ensures that all reference frames agree that the transmission-event happened before the reception-event.[17] However, in the case of a hypothetical signal moving faster than light, there would always be some frames in which the signal was received before it was sent, so that the signal could be said to have moved backwards in time. And since one of the two fundamental postulates of special relativity says that the laws of physics should work the same way in every inertial frame, then if it is possible for signals to move backwards in time in any one frame, it must be possible in all frames. This means that if observer A sends a signal to observer B which moves FTL (faster than light) in A’s frame but backwards in time in B’s frame, and then B sends a reply which moves FTL in B’s frame but backwards in time in A’s frame, it could work out that A receives the reply before sending the original signal, a clear violation of causality in every frame. According to special relativity it would take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate a slower-than-light object to the speed of light, and although relativity does not forbid the theoretical possibility of tachyons which move faster than light at all times, when analyzed using quantum field theory it seems that it would not actually be possible to use them to transmit information faster than light,[19] and there is no evidence for their existence.

Yes, I believe it is possible. You simply have to change the frequency of an object or energy to that which does not exist primarily in our universe. The matrix of the energy frequency itself is the liability. Change the matrix of the energy and you can extend it into other acceleration frames. You have to change the vibratory nature of the matter or energy itself.
When an object moves along, it receives its particular frequency from the quantum vacuum. Accelerate it with additional energy, and it will still receive that frequency regardless of how fast it is being propelled below light speed. When it picks up its frequency, time can begin to slow down, because it wants to remain at its most comfortable state, its rest mass. So, it is hindered from going faster because it wants to vibrate at the matrix of it rest mass, its natural frequency. The energy of accelerating it brings other energies to bear, and this pressurizes the object, and it compresses. When it compresses, it gets closer to a fixed frequency, and with a vengeance. It gets even denser and heavier, and starts to channel even more fixed frequencies. No matter how hard one tries, it will remain confined to this universe.
Here’s an essay on the subject. Yes, it is theoretical. But once one finds the reason why energy remains confined in our universe one can begin to find a way to breach the light speed barrier.
Faster than Light Speed
Travel in our current universe is limited by the self-repeating, standing wave frequencies exhibited by objects, which come into conflict with other frequencies as acceleration is applied. The repeating frequencies are a liability within our space-time: they are unable to escape our universe, due to their fixed nature, as they receive and extract their specific frequency from the quantum vacuum. At higher rates of speed, compression ensues in objects traveling rapidly and this fixes the frequency even more, as fixed frequencies chafe against higher frequencies, becoming pressurized by them. The object will begin to channel even denser frequencies as acceleration and pressure mounts, and as more acceleration is applied, weight increases. This ends up producing a scenario where more energy expended means more energy required for additional propulsion. Thus, the force from these repeating, universe-bound frequencies is confined within the niche of our universe, established to operate and be sustained under certain parameters.
Continual modulation and decompression of the frequency would spread it out over multiple dimensions simultaneously and it would no longer be contained within the frequency definition of 3 D space. Full modulation would allow the energy to interface more rapidly and completely with energy space, fluctuating in between normal space and zero point energy space. The force of the energy would be smattered across multiple dimensions, now being able to escape the confining locality that left it mired in regular 3 D space. The energy would no longer adhere to a linear, self-repeating, standing frequency, but a non-linear, multi-dimensional, decompressed, modulated, hyper frequency . As it tapped into the zero point field with greater regularity and intensity it would receive more energy from the quantum vacuum
and would increase momentum accordingly. This would enable a craft, once its molecules had been manipulated, to increase its velocity beyond light speed. Interstellar travel then becomes manageable. This would not even require massive amounts of energy to be applied, just a deft modulation of the frequencies contained in the energy so they no longer existed and manifested mainly in the fixed 3 dimensional
structure of our universe. Most or all of the energy would be supplied via the zero point vacuum source. When the craft went beyond light speed its force would occupy a new space-time niche, so there is no chance of it colliding with matter in our universe–it would tunnel around it, circumventing direct contact. Force would be dispersed across multiple dimensions. Multi dimensional entropy would be avoided by
increasing energy and maintaining a rigorous control over the evolving frequency so it remained self-contained, modulation would involve decompression of energy into exterior space-time and also compression coupled with interior modulation. Upon braking, the energies would be allowed to implode rather than explode, setting a destination point.
