How do you think of a good name for a character and background?

Is there a site or anything that can brainstorm a good character name as well as something that inspire a few notes on a character’s background?

I use baby naming sites– a lot of them are divided into sections so that you can search by nationality, sex, religion, number of syllables, etc. Another useful tip is to search historical documents for rare or unique names. For a few examples, see the links below.

As for developing a character’s background, I base mine on people I meet in real life. Readers identify more with characters that seem like real people– and what better way to accomplish that than observing real people? Eventually, your characters will start to develop their own personalities, and you can go from there!
