How do you overcome writers block?
I love writing, its one of my favourite passtimes and I’ve been told I’m good at it. These days I’ve had a lot of writing assignments for school (mostly essays.) Usually the teachers assign a topic and sometimes I don’t know how to start my introduction. How can I decide what I want to say?

This is partially your teachers’ fault. I’m an English teacher. If your teacher did not give you enough information in the topic prompt, then you’ll feel like you’re floating around without a start. Therefore:
1. Look at the assigned topic very carefully. Choose some of the words from the “prompt” to form a thesis sentence. Once you have that, write an introduction that leads up to it.
2. Without a good prompt, consider your source. Are you writing about a literature or a topic from your lifetime? If you’re writing about lit., check out other critical work online and agree or disagree. If you’re writing about your life, form an opinion about a person or an event in your life that you are willing to share. Then tell the story leading up to that decision (opinion).
Good luck!

All of what ja3op said.
Also – one “trick” to help to simply start writing – anything – is to sit in front of a blank piece of paper, with a topic in mind, and at a certain point START WRITING.
A kitchen timer is a good signal to tell you when to start.
It does NOT matter what you write – just write anything, and keep writing until you have filled the paper.
Then you can look at what you have written, and find the place where it starts to make sense – then take it from there.
This does work – trust me, I’m a teacher too.

I agree with KT, keep writing , ideas keep coming as you keep writing

There are ton’s of ways to get past writers block! For one, you can just brainstorm idea’s of what you want to say throughout the entire essay. Just jot down the main idea’s of your body paragraphs. Find a common ground with all of your idea’s and form a thesis statement.
Another way to overcome writers block is to just write–anything, and nothing all at the same time. Sit in front of your computer, and just type. Eventually you’re juices will start to flow, and, as long as you remember to keep your assignment in mind, you’ll start getting something that will work for your assignment.
I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Eat chocolate, go to starbucks order a coffee, have a notebook with you, sit down and relax. Then the ideas come flowing through your mind like a waterfall.
