How can i get back into writing poetry daily?

I am a serious poet, and have been doing in since I was a kid- But I am really having a hard time sitting down and writing. I will just watch tv or talk on the phone instead, even though I know poetry makes me feel fullfilled. Any tips on getting back to the grind?

Try going to scenic spots for a change. You might be inspired by the awesome beauty of some tourist destinations. Or find a love object. If you are in love your heart will wax poetic even of just the falling rain.

Writing is very much about motivation & self-discipline.
You must make yourself devote some time daily to writing. Even if it isn’t something very good. Sometimes just getting words down on paper or on the computer is accomplishing something.
You might find that just taking a notebook outside & sitting in the quiet of nature helps to give some inspiration. It often does me.
You don’t have to sit down expecting to write a masterpiece or something you feel is good. Just the act of writing things that come into your mind or how you feel about something can get the creative juices flowing again.
Try putting off turning on the TV or picking up the phone until you have spent at least 15 minutes writing. Often if you have spent 15 minutes you will find that you want to do it longer! :)

anytime you have a spare moment, just grab a piece of paper and pen(always carry them on you, that makes it easier)and scribble down what you are feeling into a poem. as you do that it will become easier and easier to find a specific time to write. or you can say “at this time every day i will write, even if it is just an idea for a poem, or half a poem” and even if the poem doesn’t turn out that great, go back and work on it.

    good luck!

I took a poetic leap of faith in 2007. I had a struggling home office that was reaching for straws in 5 different directions. I decided to focus on one thing, and I made that thing poetry. For the first six months I did nothing but read and write. Granted, I had my wife in full support of my efforts and we ate a lot of frozen peas, but…we survived and grew and flourished. In 2009 we at poetsofmars.com plan to take over the world.

I love poetry, but I only write it when it comes to me, otherwise you can force it and the end product is not what you expect. Just take the time off and let it come to you naturally.

  6. Elaine P Says:

Poetry can’t be written on command. But maybe you can find an hour every day to sit and think without distraction. The poetry will come to fill the silence. Try it, what do you have to lose?

  7. Muk Bag Says:

    As Elaine has said…

What do you have to lose?

  8. DAHha be merry Says:

Sometimes in the evening I will sit in front of the TV with a pencil and paper and write words, or thoughts, or a fraze or two. Eventually, they become poems.

Dream, think, talk, sing, muse. Turn off the tv, or pull the fuse. When the spirit grabs you, write! Get angry, be romantic, work at remembering. Read!(especially other poets).
