Historical fiction? Romance? Mystery?

I enjoy reading romantic historical fiction books with a little mystery added in. Every book I have read lately, I can predict the end before I even finish chapter one. Does anyone know the author or a series of books that might be something I would like to read. I am a bored elementary teacher with the summer off and I love to read.

Wilbur Smith & Bernard Cornwell are good authors of historical fiction books. Wilbur Smith tends to have some romance in his but as for being a mystery… not quite so much.
Wilbur smith I would recommend the following - Birds of Prey “about 1500’s naval history of Piracy… English vs Dutch” or River God “about ancient Egypt” Each of these have books with the same characters but those are the first in the line.
Bernard Cornwell - Hmm, I think Gallows Thief or maybe his King Arthur series would be find. Or even his Archer’s Tale series. Take a peek at their covers and see what interests you.

    Blood and Gore!

    Richard Laymon
    Edward Lee
    Jonathan Maberry

Their books will keep you on your toes and make you actually think someone is in your house! lol

You would LOVE the Lady Julia Grey mysteries by Deanna Raybourn. They’re exactly what you’re looking for. Romantic historical fiction with mystery.

Catherine Coulter “The Courtship” was a good one

Well, I’m not too sure about romantic historical fiction, but have you ever read anything by Phillipa Gregory? “The Other Boleyn Girl” is fantastic.

Also, “Gentlemen and Players” by Joanne Harris is very good. You might think that you see where it’s going, but it totally throws you for a loop at the end. The kind where you have to scan through the beginning thinking “How did I miss this?!” It’s really worth the read.

Well, if you’re an elementary school teacher, these will probably be too young for you, but a series of books I very much enjoyed that are all three of the things you mentioned, is the Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray - “A Great and Terrible Beauty”, “Rebel Angels”, and “The Sweet Far Thing”, which take place in 1895. Good, fun books, not outstanding writing, but easy reads with a good ending.

Also, possibly an even more easy read, “The Luxe”, “Rumors”, and “Envy” by Anna Godbersen, which take place in 1899. Again, easy read, but fun and enjoyable.

Another, and one of my favorites, “Northanger Abbey” by Jane Austen. Known as her ‘gothic thriller’ it definitely has romance, mystery, and obviously history.

A slightly harder read than the first two, but easier than the third, “The Morning Gift” by Eva Ibbotson. Takes place in Austria in WWII, it has a lot of romance, though not much mystery. But very good.

Hope this helped, and enjoy your summer reading!!!

I read quite a bit of historical fiction/romance, most romance novels tend to be predictable so I usually opt for ones that are funny or silly just for entertainment.

Seducing Mr. Darcy by Gwyn Cready
The Tenacious Miss Tamerlane by Kasey Michaels

These are two I like just because they’re silly/funny and when I’m bored that’s all I need

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, there are 6 books in the series
