Try “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy” by Gary Schmidt.
It is about a boy who is the son of a minister. The family moves to a small town in Maine at the turn of the century (1900s). The boy makes friends with a black girl (Lizzie). There are all kinds of repercussions and the boy learns some valuable lessons. It is about 220 pages.
mayflowers pretty good by philbrick.. idk if its considered fiction though. also johnny tremaine if i recall correctly but that might be a little too elementary and sort of about the revolutionary war. the diary of anne frank also.. has elements of war though obviously.

I love the Little House on the Prairie books..
simple to read, really interesting, and full of historically accurate details
