I’m writing this answer assuming you mean your freshman year of high-school, based on the assignment. Apologies if not.
But that aside, it might help to just sit back from the essay and think about what you’ve learned this year, and what your view on writing is. If you’ve grown to enjoy writing more, you could talk about that. If writing means something different to you now than it used to, you can mention that too. If it helps, dig up some old stories or papers and compare them to ones you wrote more recently. Look for areas you have improved in, and talk about that. If you’ve done a new type of essay/paper/poem/story this year, you can talk about how the process of learning that was.
Hope that helped good luck!
