Guidelines to how to start writing? 10 easy points?

I have few threads to a story I want to write. As I never wrote before, I would like some advice & guidelines please.
Also what kind of stories interest you the most? Mystery? fiction? ..etc
Mention an author that you consider one of the best out there.
Thanks :)

  1. booklover Says:

    I read mistery, romance/action

  2. Shape-Shifter Says:

Mystery/thrillers are the way to go, Boss. They sell quite well and always have an audience.

Keep your chapters fairly short, with one major chunk or scene per chapter. Avoid over using the word “had” and refrain from writing overly flowery or adjective-ridden material (purple prose). Trust your gut, keep it simple. Employ juicy adjectives when there is genuine need for it.

If you want some real inspiration check out one of James Lee Burke’s series of thrilling Detective Robicheaux Mysteries:

    Burning Angel

    Dixie City Jam

    Cadillac Jukebox

    Jolie Blon’s Bounce

    The Tin Roof Blow Down

    Last Car to Elysian Fields
