I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.
Read it. Trust me, it’s nothing like the movie, but it’s still fantastic.
Also, The Running Man by Richard Bachman (AKA Stephen King) was very good.

neverland by neil gaiman, hands down.
the cover makes it look like it would be really cheesy, but it’s easily his best book.

Harry Turtledove, Eric Flint, David Weber, Orson Scott Card and Larry Niven are all excellent writers of science fiction and some fantasy. Of these, some of my favorites include:
Harry Turtledove: Worldwar/Colonisation series, Great War/American Empire/Settling Accounts series, Crosstime Traffic series, and many more
Eric Flint: Assiti Shards series (1632, 1633, etc..),
David Weber: Honor Harrington series
Orson Scott Card: Ender’s Game
Larry Niven: Ringworld series
