All Quiet On the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is a great war novel about WWI. We read it this year in 9th grade honors english, so it should be perfect for you. Also, the characters are German - there is nothing American about it. There is lots of symbolism that you could analyze for a report and also the author is very interesting - he is a WWI veterin. It is a little more than 250 pages I think, but is a relatively easy read. There is a lot of descriptive battle scenes if you’re interested in war, and there is a sparknotes page about it as well as a movie or two that you could watch to further understand the book if it seems complicated when you read it.

1777: The Year of the Hangman is also really good
