Certificates are the best awards for students.
Instead of 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, the following prizes are more appropriate:
The Most Creative Piece (Story / Poem / Play)
The Most Interesting Piece (Story / Poem / Play)
The Most Breath-taking Piece (Story / Poem / Play)
The Most Meaningful Piece (Story / Poem / Play)
    and so on
You may want your kids to perform their work in a school event or morning assembly.

we do at my school, once a year there is an internal competition and can you win a voucher as well as allthrough out the year the English department makes sure that other competitions outside the school are known about and help you enter if you want. the internal one has three levels, junior (yrs 7&8), intermediate(yr9&10) and senior (Yr11&12) and also a poetry compition in just junior and senior, all prizes are the same
