If you did not travel actually, and you are a  wise traveler like me who travels only in imagination. You are lucky to travel safely, without facing airplane hijacking, or boat pirating in your voyage!  You travel in you dreams, awake or sleeping. In both cases you enjoy traveling, seeing people you know, and people you never saw before, strange people, with ugly heads or huge shapes. If you face danger, like someone is running behind you to kill you, you immediately find  your way to escape. You simply, just  open your eyes.

My friend Jimmy, was one of these wise travelers. He used to travel every day and night. In the street, or in the classroom. Swimming, or eating. Jogging or play poling, He was a wise traveler all the time. His ugly face made him a wise traveler.

One day, his travel was real, he took the greyhound to California,  in the way, he knew a girl, she was in his age, she’s leaving her parents to find her way away from sisters, brothers, and away from Mom, and Dad.

He was leaving his town, people began to call him names, Mr. imagination. Dummy traveler, honey dreamer. And the last name made him decide to leave the town forever, Mr. fantasy! He hated to hear that name!

They both discovered that wanted freedom, and to begin a new life. She found that he was funny, and sincere in his talks. He found her a good listener to his jokes. In short, they found each other.

The trip was too long, and they have to stay the night at the hotel. To save some money, she suggested to have one room and divide the rate in between. He accepted the idea. At the room, there was a program show on TV. She was watching. Channel 55 broadcasting a film about James dean. The good looking guy of the 1960’s, at the end of the film, he dies in his way to meet his girl friend.  She waited for him forever, after she new the news. The girl was crying, he noticed, and gave her a handkerchief. Waited for her to come back to reality. 

He began to tell her about his visit to Tokyo, Japan in his dreams. He read once about the Geisha girls, and ever since, he dreamed as traveling to Tokyo and have a good time with these fairy tales about the Geisha girls.  She smiled, and listened to his story with dreams. Then she began to laugh on his jokes, when he discovered that the geisha girl has a boy-friend, came suddenly while he was trying to make out with the geisha girl. 

-          “poor Jimmy!, wherever you travel, you find yourself in trouble.”

-           “Yes! You are right, but not all times I was running, in fact sometimes I was hiding, for my safety.” They laughed together.

-          “Time to sleep” she said, “he suggested to sleep on the couch. She did not mind, but she said, that he may sleep on the bed beside her. If he can control himself. But he insisted to sleep away from her on the couch. In the morning he found her laying beside him and her arm over his chest.

Entering creative writing contests can become a lucrative yet addictive pastime for many writers who are spurred on by the challenge of pitting their wits against those of other dedicated writers. Cash prizes, publication and recognition for their endeavours entice many writers to submit their stories in the hopes of securing one of the top prizes. There are numerous creative writing contests available and a scan through any writing magazine will highlight some but for a more detailed search, simply type creative writing contests into a search engine such as Google or yahoo and a vast array of results will appear.

Finding a contest that inspires is the key to doing well. There is no point entering if the topic fails to stimulate as the resulting entry would lack enthusiasm and passion, something that a judge would clearly see. Writing with passion is important but writing with a controlled and sustained passion is even better, a good writer will be able to impart all the information needed a little at a time, unveiling unique aspects about the characters and the plots at just the right speed to tantalise the reader. Find a contest that appeals and sparks off that all important imagination trail Read the rules several times. Most writers fail simply because they do not pay attention to detail. Don’t just start writing, think. The thinking process is an integral part of being a good writer; they work hand in hand so allow time to mull over potential ideas and then eventually, when happy, make your choice and start writing. Plan the story. Decide where to start within the plot itself and create a compelling introduction by starting off at an exciting point, then draw the reader in with carefully crafted words. Know those characters. If your characters are under-developed and uninteresting, the judge’s interest will wane, so invest some time to create strong, exciting and 3 dimensional characters that appear larger than life. It helps to really get inside the skin of the characters and make them believable. Try to live through the story as you write it, feel every emotion and witness every event that unfolds. This gives your writing an extra and most important winning element. Edit ruthlessly and ensure that the specified word count has been adhered to. Editing is vital to ensure that any unnecessary words are eliminated. Never pad out a story unnecessarily, every word should be important. Develop your own style and a confidence in your work. Don’t leave it until the last minute to write your story. Whilst determination and a ticking clock can kick-start that all important creative process, having time to re-read and edit is paramount. Don’t waste a great storyline and a well-written piece of fiction through starting your story too late and submitting with spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. Think from a judge’s perspective, could your submission be improved and achieve greater winning potential?

If you are a parent who is looking to help your child develop creatively and emotionally as well as physically, you will find that you need to look into how creative writing is something that might affect their life. For instance, if your child is one who was always drawn to stories and to the ideas that can be conveyed through the written word, you might have a little writer on your hands! Children are naturally fascinated with stories, but while some children love the idea of being told stories, other children love the idea of telling stories themselves. Take a moment to think about how you can emphasize this aspect of your child and how you can help it grow.

In the first place, remember that a child who is a writer is likely going to be a child who is reader. If your child is someone who loves stories, make sure that they have plenty of access to them. For instance, this might mean taking your child to the library on a regular basis and it might mean that you should look into other ways that you can move forward with how your child reads. A reading child should by all means be encouraged and the library is a good place to start. If you are ready to help your child make the leap to writing, the first step is getting them to read.

Remember that children really benefit from it when they have a lot of contact with their parents with regard to the things that they do. When you are thinking about how to share this hobby with your child, consider what they are reading and read it along with them. When they are young, you can read to them, and as they get older, you can read with them. Talk about the things that you have read and make sure that you are expressing your opinion in a clear and constructed fashion. This will help them look at stories and give them an appreciation of the way that they can move forward with the written word.

Be encouraging of what they write and make sure that you are in a place where they feel comfortable with you reading it. The stories that they write can be a lot of fun and you should always be happy to read them. What kind of writing do they like to do? Some children will naturally gravitate towards writing fiction, while other children gravitate towards writing nonfiction or things that feel more personal or confessional. Remember that your child’s writing will change and develop as they do, and this can encompass a lot of different writing. Be patient and realize that they have a lot of material that they might want to cover.

Nurturing your child’s urge to write is very important, so see what you can do to help them develop; writing is a useful skill no matter what they want to do, and using their imagination is essential!

One can be a good writer, but not be able to spell correctly.

I found this to be one of the largest deterrents for conveying any situation or scene to the reader, because the student has an inability to recognize his lack of correct spelling.

Many rely on the way they have spelled everything (no matter how wrong it is), simply because that was always the way they always had spelled it. It just seems natural to them.

One can’t allow the misspelling of a word when there is the slightest feeling that it doesn’t look correct. This is being careless. When that occurs, use the dictionary to be sure, and accurate.

No publisher, should you rely on them to publish your book, will read your manuscript when they detect misspelled words. There is no situation where it is acceptable.

Today, there should be no excuse for misspelled words with computers. In fact, if it’s your real desire to misspell a word your computer will have a fit.

Don’t be afraid of words, but don’t be too snobbish with them either. It doesn’t harm anyone if you use a word of four syllables which covers a full sentence.

But, doing it continually only makes the statement that your ego is showing.

 

To be sure, many a writer is enlightened by the meaning of a new word to add to his vocabulary, but overuse will deter the reader’s interest. This is a read and not a lesson in the English language.

 



 

Contractions

 

Anyone who reads is aware of the use of contractions. There was a time in the history of writing where these were frowned upon. It was considered laziness on the part of the writer.

Today, contractions are used in all forms of writing.

Example: He can’t do it because it’s not acceptable.

 

This would have been written like this in earlier writings:

Example: He can not do it because it is not acceptable.

 

It’s (it is) (its – without an apostrophe – is the possessive form.)

 

I’m (I am).

 

I’ve (I have).

 

We’d, (we had).

 

We’ve (we have).

 

You’ve (you have).

 

You’d (you would).

 

Weren’t (were not).

 

Mustn’t (must not).

 

Can’t (can not).

 

He’d (he had).

 

Won’t (will not).

 

Wouldn’t (would not).

 

Couldn’t (could not).

 

Wasn’t (was not).

 

Weren’t (were not).

 

They’d (they had).

 

They’ve (they have).

 

Wouldn’t (would not).

 

Shouldn’t (should not).

 

She’d (she had).

 

Notice in today’s writings:

 

Should’ve = should have

 

Could’ve = could have

 

Would’ve = would have.

These are all acceptable uses in today’s writing, provided it isn’t overdone. People speak this way, therefore most readers feel right at home when they read contractions.

It’s most acceptable in dialog, although I find contractions being used in ordinary text as well. I find no fault with that. After all, we are writers of today, trying to please readers of today and contractions are legitimate.

Some writers make the mistake of using “it’s” when, in reality, they mean “its” - the possessive form where no apostrophe should be used.

Example: It’s time for the class to go home – is correct. “It’s” means “it is”.

 

This book is not in its proper place – is correct. “Its” is the possessive form.

 



 

The Possessive Form

 

Names requiring the possessive form are the nemesis of many writers. Names that end in “S” are the worst.

Example: We met Charles’s friend tonight.

 

Somehow it just seems funny but it’s correct.

 

It would attack the ear to write something like: “Moseses, Laws” whereas changing it to: “Moses’ Laws” would work.

 

Most names ending in “S” should be made possessive by adding the apostrophe and another “S”. Other names ending in “S” need to add “es”.

 

But, when it becomes a struggle to pronounce it, use the apostrophe only.

Examples:

 

That’s Myers’ umbrella.

 

The Joneses house is beautiful

Writing short stories or poetry is where most writers begin their long journey towards publication. It provides a perfect creative outlet for those who have the feint stirrings of a story to tell and wish to transfer those creative thoughts to paper. Crafting a unique and well-rounded story is not easy and there are many pitfalls but with a little help, success is only a few steps away. When writing short stories, always consider what you are trying to achieve. It is very easy for the writer to become lost in the depths of their own imagination and a 1000 word story can easily be trebled. Writing short stories is an art form and it deserves a great deal of recognition as the writer must be focussed and dedicated to the task at hand.

There are many different story lengths available, writers can choose to write flash fiction which can be anything from approximately 50 words up to 1000, although many fiction magazines seek out stories which also have had the chance to develop and grow and these can be around the 2000 word mark. Identifying a market for the story is the first step and then once this has been determined, it is time to plan the story in its entirety. Writing short stories that will sell readily requires additional planning, so extend the market research around the intended publication. For example, what do you know about the readership? A story about a teenage pregnancy is not going to be of interest to publications aimed at those in their senior years unless the writer can make it relate to them significantly.

Many writers fail at the first post by writing solely for themselves. There is of course, nothing wrong with writing for the sheer joy of creativity alone, but as many writers would like nothing more than to see their story and name in print, it is vital that those writers change their mind set from that of an amateur to a professional and this will then afford them much more opportunities and in fact, fuel that creative fire even further.

When writing a story with a minimal word count, many writers neglect to develop their characters fully but it is important that the reader begins to connect with the characters and start to care as to the outcome, otherwise the story will lack interest for them. Allow the reader to identify with a strong human interest angle and this will help keep them interested and following through to the end.

Stories are around us all the time but it is our own unique interpretation that makes the story come alive. As writers, it is important that any witnessed mannerisms, characteristics and events are all stored away for future use, as aspects of events can be used in short stories, for example an old creepy building that you may have observed in passing could be used when trying to picture a haunted house for a ghost story. Life produces unlimited opportunities for story tellers everywhere but when writing short stories with a serious intent, we have to make good use of this free material and then we can go from amateur to professional quickly and easily.

You’ve done it. You’ve gone and written the next Great American Novel. Shockingly, some dolt at a publishing house has actually recognized your brilliance. This is it. The big time! There’s only one problem…nobody is buying your novel.

Write it and they will come. Okay, that’s a take off of a certain baseball movie cliché, but it is just as true for writing. The most misunderstood thing new writers don’t understand about novels is writing them is only the first step. You might write the piece de resistance for the decade, but it doesn’t matter if nobody knows about it.

Will you get rich writing? Well, you will if you are the next Stephen King. Most writers obviously don’t make it that far. I read a marvelous travel book written by a young lady who had traveled to Costa Rica. She ended up falling in love with a man in prison there and ultimately living with him after he left prison. It was cheaper for her to buy her own novel from me used on Amazon than from her own publisher! Welcome to the business of writing.

Writing your novel is obviously a huge step in the revenue generating process. That being said, the modern publishing industry is a cutthroat one. You must be a good writer, but you also must learn to market your material. Most publishers are not going to make a massive effort. It is you who must do this. It is you who has to get out and work the book signings. It is you who needs to show the world one way or another that you’ve written a masterpiece. I used to think that I am destined to become a scientist. As I enjoyed discovering scientific pursuits, I am completely living by the fact that everything in this world can be explained by science. I am in the bliss of realization that not everyone else can understand what I can, unless I will discover  it for the sake of humanity.

Voila! But look where I am now? I am here facing the computer, making articles for the Internet, posting in a blog, and fortunately expressing my self through a keyboard and a computer monitor (a pen and a paper seemed to be obsolete here). Writing for my own sake, and for the humanity’s maybe, is a tedious but fulfilling job. And I can still say that I am fortunate because I have gone through all of these.

What’s with the writing?

Writers often than not settle for a kind of self-expression that is fulfilling to them. In the first place this what writing is all about—freedom of expression. As for me, I am more comfortable in the method of writing that is more personal, interesting, and creative enough to pull the attention of my readers.

But honestly, let me tell you that am not well-rounded enough of all these stuff and of my style in writing, rather put it; do I have a my own distinct style in writing? You judge by having a comment on this post.

What I meant by the phrase “not well-rounded enough” is that, I am a bit hesitant to try new things because I am usually carried away by disappointments from people. You say enough of this immaturity blah blahs. I agree. By now, old lessons should have been learned. And one final thing though: Creative Writing gets me in to the craft.

Let’s get to the point.

As defined by wikipedia, Creative Writing is considered to be any writing, fiction, poetry, or non-fiction, that goes outside the bounds of normal professional, journalistic, academic, and technical forms of literature. Works which fall into this category include novels, epics, short stories, and poems.

Why choose this kind of medium?

With all the political, social, and economic fuss unfolding the whole earth everyday, would you not want to divert your attention into the distinct point of  view of J.K.Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien, or Stephenie Meyer? I know a lot of us has gone mad if not crazy to make this world a peaceful and a happy place to live. You count me in, and I assure you I’d rather float with the air than catch below all the dust that it carries.

To divert our attention means, we are opening new frontiers of our being human and eventually refreshing our minds so that the next time we face the problem we can confront it with a new knowledge and understanding; that we are only humans, hesitant and afraid of our own world but brave enough to overcome it. As Edgar Allan Poe, the most regarded writer in American literature said  “all that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”

So the next time you are awfully confronted by the world, I recommend you to write your thoughts and ideas, as creatively as you can—you wouldn’t know, you might be penning the next classic story ever told. And this will eventually help you overcome your self and teach you lessons that can only be found as you go along with your chosen medium of expression.

Where to write your Creative Writing piece?

The Internet is a good medium to flaunt what a good writer you are. But as you delve into it, you will find a vast source of knowledge and I tell you it will hit you in the face big time. This is otherwise known as information overload. But what if all this information is capsulized and sprinkled with creative contexts and eventually packaged for the readers to feast on? This is interesting.

How many of us have made the big mistake of adding too many characters and too many plots in a short story? Well, I actually did. That was way back in my college days and I was tasked to make a short story but I ended up making too many characters that in the end, I did not submit it. Sometimes, our strong imagination can overcome our logic and we begin to pour all of our ideas and that often is the number one mistake for aspiring short story writers.

A short story is, well, a brief fictional or non-fictional piece of literature. This is why it is very important to limit the size and content of the piece. How? Here are some important pointers for short story beginners in order to save you from the frustration that I have felt.

First rule is to set a number of characters. A short story should only have a few characters. This is not an epic play where you deal with 20 characters and side-characters. By having a small number of players in this literary piece, the conversation, plot and the entire story is made brief and this is the basic foundation for a good short story.

The next thing you need to understand is the simple plot. Of course, we all love a good mystery and sometimes we cannot help but place intricate and skillfully designed plots in order to raise the level of surprise in a story. The only problem with this is that you also lengthen the story itself and this is not a good sign. The plot should be simplified, allowing the story to reach the climax in a short span of time.

These are the basics when it comes to writing a short story. For most beginners, keeping the content ” short, but sweet ” is a sound advice. Just because the story is brief doesn’t mean you have to take away the quality of the piece. If you want to be double-sure, try using an English writing checker or have the short story checked by a pro. Besides, writing short stories are meant to be fun, not a chore.

There you have it, my ideas on how to become a great short story writer. With more practice, you might become a master in writing them and you can earn a lot because of your talents. However, keep on learning them for now so that you will learn a lot.
