How to Use Index Cards to Write a Novel Outline


Everyone has plans to write the great American novel. In ***?ct, most researchers believe that everyone has at least one great story inside them. However, you may be wondering, then if everyone has a great story, how can they get the story out?

The key to getting the story out is to ****?anize your thoughts with an outline and get busy writing. Sounds easy, right? It can be. If you use the handy-dandy index card system to write your novel outline. In ***?ct, if you use this easy-to-follow plan, you will be able to quickly and efficiently ****?anize those thoughts and get that great American novel out of your head and into paper!

But, why note cards and not paper, you may be wondering. Here’s why:

- They are incredibly small and easy to carry around. In ***?ct, you can easily plop them in your purse or bag and write down your ideas ***? you think of them.

- They are easy to discard. If you change your mind about an idea , you can throw it away without having to throw away the entire paper.

- They are easy to ****?anize and sort.

- They come in various sizes to fit your precise needs.

Now, that you know why they are so great. You may be wondering how to plan out a novel using them.

Here’s how:

1. Figure out what you would like to accomplish with your novel and write specific questions on each note card. For instance:

- How many chapters will you have?

- What will be your plot and ***?tting?

- What type of characters and scenes will you have?

- Will you choose fiction or nonfiction?

- What tone will it be?

2. Next, start evaluating your ideas ***?rther by taking 10 more note cards and writing answers to each idea you come up with. That is, put one story ideas at the top of each card.

3. Third, go through each note card and place a star by the ones with the most potential while crossing off the ones that won’t work. When you come an idea that won’t work, throw it away.

4. Then, go through the cards and choose the idea that has the most potential.

5. Once you’ve decided, take 10-20 more cards and create chapter headings for the winning idea. Write down how you ****?t the novel to be ****?anized. For each new thought, place it on a ***?parate note card.

To transform this idea into a plot you might ***?k, what if a very obese woman from our universe ended up in this alternate universe? What would that be like for her? What if she suddenly was considered drop-dead gorgeous in this alternate universe? What would that be like for her? What if she started losing weight? What if by losing weight, she ends up ***? unhappy in this universe ***? she was in the one she left behind? Do you ***?e how this works? You play with what if.

Once you’ve ***?ked the what if questions ***?veral ***?mes, you are ready to ***?k the next question. Why? The why question expands on your what if questions. You use why to flesh out the scenarios you came up with ***? a result of ***?king what if.

For example, one of the what if questions for the alternate universe idea could be, ‘what if the main character started losing weight?’ To expand on this what if, you would ***?k, ‘Why’. Why would she lose weight? The why would take you back to what if. What if she lost weight because she was so happy that she no longer ate to cover her pain?

That what if would lead you to another why: Why, if she ate to cover pain, wouldn’t she just eat again once she started losing weight in the new reality? Wouldn’t that make her unhappy enough to binge again? Why wouldn’t she just go back to eating a lot?

What if? Why? Do you ***?e the process? You ***?k what if. That gives you information. Then you ***?k why. That gives you more information, which leads you back to what if.

Assess Your Novel-Writing Progress With These Four Questions


You have to check the status of your novel now and again during the writing process—things do go wrong, after all. Consider the halfway mark a ****?d point to take a breather, get out a notebook, and do a quick ***.ssment of what you’ve done so ***?r.

Mid-point ***.ssment is NOT the ***?me to start rewriting, though. Not even if you’ve gone tearing off in the wrong direction somewhere down the line. ***.ssment is a thinking step (and a taking-notes step), not revision. Four questions will help you determine the course of your story, and whether you’re getting what you ****?t from it so ***?r or not. So, notebook in hand, ***?k yourself these questions:

First…are you having any ***?n?

I’m absolutely ***?rious about this question. Writers in the middle of their novels frequently slide into this ‘grit-teeth-and-grind-forward’ mode that kills their spontaneity, makes writing miserable, and allows them to do huge amounts of really bad work before stopping to realize they’ve gone off in the wrong direction. Writing is NOT the job that’s supposed to ****. Jamming ahead while ****?ing life is ***? sign that your ****?k went over a ****?ff somewhere and you missed the crash.

If your story is heading where it ought to be, you’ll be having ***?n—even if the writing is a lot of work. You’ll be excited about the twists and turns you’re coming up with, you’ll love your characters and what they’re doing, you’ll have to quell the urge to show off or read important passages to unsuspecting ***?mily members. This is the way you ****?t the writing to feel. If you’ve taken a wrong turn, on the other hand, the writing is going to feel like drudgery—like punishment. If it ever feels like punishment, stop right away. Something has gone wrong with the story.

Second, does your ***?ntence still work?

(I talked about The ***?ntence, which is a tool you use to define your story, in a previous article.) If the ****?k you’re writing still fits the concepts, characters, and twist in your ***?ntence, go on to the next question.

If it doesn’t, you’re either going to have to figure out how to make the ****?k fit The ***?ntence, or how to rewrite The ***?ntence to fit the ****?k. If you’re still passionate about your original concepts and characters, figure out where you’ve gone wrong in the story. If you love your new direction, figure out via The ***?ntence what these changes you’ve made will mean to your bigger picture.

Third, are your characters the ***?ople you ****?t them to be?

They don’t have to be carrying out your orders like little clockwork automatons, ****? they do need to be working, not sitting around the ****?l drinking tea and sneering at you whenever you try to put them into a scene. There are ways of dealing with problem characters—but first, you have to recognize that you have a problem, and that they’re it.

Finally, how’s your plot holding up?

My students generally use my plot card technique—plot cards allow you to be flexible, to move things around, to toss cards that no longer lie along the path your story is taking. ****? you shouldn’t have to toss them all. And every plot card should make ***?nse in relation to every other plot card, and the whole should add up to a complete story. If they don’t—if your ****?k has somehow become a ***?ries of unrelated incidents, it’s ***?me to go back to plot cards and figure out what you’ve missed, and how to fit it in.

At this point, you’re probably wondering why you don’t just go ahead and make the changes you ***?e you’re going to have to make. The answer is simple, though a bit strange.

You’re not finished yet, and any revisions you do halfway through may have to be tossed when the ***?cond half of the story takes an unexpected turn.

For now, mark out problem areas, figure out workable fixes you can make when you’re done, and then get back to writing, knowing that everything is fixable. Just not yet fixed.

Novel Writing, My True Story

Novel writing begins with a thought, a vision, something that you ***?e everyday like a sign or a ***?rson. In general, you need to have an idea for a Novel before you can begin to say that you are going to write a bestseller. It has been the dreams of writers for years to write a ****?k that everyone will love and praise. I remember on my way Upstate New York I saw a sign that said The Town of Monroe. I was on my way to a party and when I arrived and sat down at the table my mind was running through scenarios so that I could begin writing. I went into the bathroom, removed some ***?ssue and wrote the ***.e down along with some character ideas. This was the birth of my first novel ***.ed The Savior of the Woods. I made one mistake, I took the easy way and ***?lf-published the novel without first researching what I would need to do to prepare for a ****?cessful novel. I wrote the novel paid the fee and two days later ***?nt in a badly edited copy of m Novel. I began ***?arching ****?gle and ***?ople were reading the novel and making statements that it was a great novel ****? the editing took away from a ****?k that was a great story. I was on my way completing my ***?cond novel I began ***?nding out 50 query letters a day and every one of them came back with an excuse why the Agent would not *****? me up. I was discouraged ****? I knew that I did not have the financial stability to ***?lf-publish and market another novel. I held on to the novel for almost a year before I became encouraged again and started once again attempting to solicit an Agent. I came across the same problems ***? the first ***?me. No one was interested in *****?ing up my project to represent me. I refused to give up trying to find a way to publish my novel so I went on yahoo and began ***?arching for independent publishers who were looking for a fiction novel. The first one I came across was Publish America. I read some reviews and ***?ople were saying that Publish America was a POD (purchase on demand) Publisher. I called and ***?ked them and they informed me that they were not so I ***?nt in my best query letter and after two day’s they requested to read A Brand New Night for Murder and then published it.

If you know that you have written a great novel then you have to get it published. The thing new writers do not know is that most writing groups do not consider a ***?lf-published Author a published Author and they will not accept your submission for membership. Remember in your quest to become an Author do not accept any contract just because you are in a hurry to get your ****?k on the market, because the quick route is usually never the right route. You have to take your ***?me, do it right by your novel and research the company or publisher before you agree to any terms. There have been ***?veral complaints about Agents who post on the web their agencies because they are not legit. I would suggest that you join a yahoo group for writers and this way you have access to writers who will be ***?miliar with Agents and Publishers.
