Historical Fiction’
I’m looking for something of a particular style; like that which Steven Pressfield’s Gates of Fire and Tides of War are written. ie. First person story…. I’m very interested in finding this and I am wondering if there are any books like this- perhaps Japanese books translated into English- like The Emperor’s Last Soldiers by Ito Masashi.
I am specifically looking for something from the soldier’s/ sailor’s/ aviator’s point of view from within the Imperial Japanese Military. Don’t get me wrong though, I thoroughly enjoyed Empire of the Sun, I just think that there aren’t enough stories (that I know of) from the Japanese point of view like The Emperor’s Last Soldiers.
Ok, maybe I need to be a little more clear. I am looking for a book that meets all or some of the above criteria and also takes place during the 1930’s and 1940’s… - marcuscorder

I know I could research this myself, but what would Yahoo be for if I did? One of my favorite time periods to read about is the 1800s, and I’ve already read the Gemma Doyle Trilogy. I need something appropriate for school, and don’t pretend you don’t know what that means. (little or no sex being the main point, if you didn’t get it) I love the 1800s, and really any time period would be great, but please no ancient civilization books unless they’re absolutely fantastic.
Merci, merci.
Also, I like US History, but I usually prefer European/English History. - ?Silver Irony?

I really enjoyed Conn Iggulden’s Conqueror series 1 and 2, and am C J Sansom’s Shardlake books. I’m going to be doing a module on the crusades next year and went something to boost my interest even further. I also prefer thrillers/war/epics over romance/drama.
There’s the Brethren trilogy by Robyn Young, but its received mixed reviews, or there’s Tom Harpers books like ‘Knights of the Cross’, again not on the levels of Cornwell for example. But from these two, which would be better? Or are there others you’d suggest? - think_hard

I read a book a while back and now I can’t remember what it was called. I believe it was written in the past 5 maybe 10 years.
Here is the what I can remember of the summary:
The hero is the youngest of a twin and he is the black sheep who marries a woman. I believe for money. They go through the normal cycle of a romance novel, but the male is holding back a secret.
The bride discovers that her husband was in love with his brother’s wife who was ill with a disease. The hero, at the ill woman’s request, gave her an overdose of medication. However she believed it to be her own husband and not his twin.
At the end of the story it turns out that the hero was actually the first born son and should have been the heir, but the father believed him to be weak and paid off the doctor to say the second was the first.
Does this ring any bells with anyone?
TIA - Kerri J

Preferably in the medieval/ancient time period, because those periods fascinate me the most. If the book is thousands of pages long, or written in Shakespearean or equivalent writing style, then don’t suggest it please. - The Luna Divider

I’m helping my 4th grader with a reading assignment.
We read a short story about Laura Engels Wilder and little house on the Prairie.
We have to answer a few questions about what we read, but one of the questions is “What makes this historical fiction?”.
To me, historical fiction is kind of an oxymoron. If it’s historical, then it’s non-fiction.
However, perhaps writing fiction during a specific time period is considered “historical fiction”.
Can someone clarify this for me? - quigonjim26

or dystopic literature as well like Brave New World? Something that is rather short (no more than 300 pages) would be preferable.
Also I would like a summary about that the book is about so I can give you the best answer. - JANE
