Check out The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. kicks off a 12-book series, it's very epic and I can't put it down. also see: A Game of Thrones. currently a 4-book series, with more coming. written by George R.R. Martin. It takes a break from the typical Lord of the Rings style of plot and does something completely new. Every plot, counterplot, and subplot are woven together into a true masterpiece.
