Your real life, good, instincts, comfort, survival, healthy equilibrium do not guide you well in fiction, they keep you from writing your character into real danger. Getting hurt or loosing what is important to them. We instinctual stop ourselves from putting the protagonist into real danger. To write a story where your reader has to find out what is going to happen. The instincts that keep you fed, under a roof, safe, will lead you away from good writing. So override those instincts, the kick in, you think you way out of fictional danger, up the aute, sitting on the edge of their seat. Write your character into the worse thing that could happen. An exercise. Also write the best thing that can happen. Also write the best thing that could happen, they reach all their goals, better than the best place, their dreams come true.
