Creative Writing - creative writing workshop Questions

Question #1:

Is being a screenplay writer a good career choice?

I have been into film for years, but never knew which part I wanted to do. I liked doing everything, but if I want to make it in the film industry I have to pick something whether it's being a D.P. or video editor. My mom keeps telling people that I want to be a director , but I really don't wish to do that and i don't understand why she keeps bragging about me so much when I haven't created much yet. All my life I have been pretty creative, and do a little writing. Thats why I have thought about studying screenplay writing in college.

If anyone has feed back about being a screenplay writer and can give me the pros and cons about it I would greatly appreciate it. If anyone knows about colleges and teen workshops that specialize in screenplay writing I would greatly appreciate that too. I've looked up a few by myself, but I haven't found much.

Question #3:

How do I write a bio with nothing to report?

I am writing my query letter and have my other parts down to exactly what I want them. But now there is the bio...I have nothing to say! I have not yet been published or won anything with the exception of winning a nothing library contest. I run a creative writing workshop at the library, though that hardly seems relative to the situation. If anyone knows what I should do please answer. Email me if you would like to help but have questions first. Anything is helpful at this point!

Question #4:

College Creative Writing Group?

I'm looking into creating a creative writing club at my school and was wondering about some of the things we should do. Our school has a very successful creative program that offers classes where we workshop each others work. And there are literary magazines here. My main objective was to workshop but I also want to make it so that we are active in the community by going into the schools and helping students with their creative writing skills. I don't want this club to seem like one of workshop classes. Any suggestions?
I don't mean teaching them like their teacher would. It would be more of an after school program like a child taking a dance class or guitar lessons. But I do like the idea of reading to elders although I'm not sure how that would involve creative writing skills.

Question #5:

What changes should I make to my Resume?

(i removed the Header with my name, address, email, etc.)

Objective: To begin a career path in software development, writing or mathematics. I am willing to travel or relocate. I am also willing to pursue an alternative career path.

Question #6:

What points should I include in my PERSONAL STATEMENT to apply for a HISTORY and ENGLISH degree?

am 17 years old and I have just completed my first year at college in the UK, and so I have to start applying for universities now...I'm very interested in history and I'm very passionate about reading novels, particularly classics; I'm also very interested in creative writing, and ultimately I would like to write novels. For now, I would like to do a degree in history and english, then my PGCE; I therefore have applied to universites who are asking for a personal statement including both English Literature, English, and History. I partook in a creative writing workshop though out my first year, as well as a book group. I've also joined a local history society and have done work experience in history and educational based work placements.
As additional extra curricular actuivities, I am studying the bass guitar (grade 8), the piano (grade 4/5), and my music theory grade 5, to be sat in winter.

My A/S Subjects (and predicted grades, seeing as I don't get my actual results for a month or so) are:

-English Literature B
-History (16th and 17th Century) A
-Critical Thinking C
-Textiles (Art) A
-Fine Art B
I have the option to Fast-track (AS and A2 in one year) Politics, and to continue any of the above subjects.

I'm not sure of the wording or structure my personal statement should make, and I'm afraid of sounding too pretentious... Can anyone offer perhaps a good STRUCTURE the essay should take, and some OPENING PHRASES, or KEY POINTS to remember? Is there a way in which I can COMBINE both English and History neatly?

Thank you very much!

Question #7:

How much more work is A2 compared to AS generally?

I am 17 years old and I have just completed my first year at college in the UK, and so I have to start applying for universities now, as well as deciding what subjects to choose next year ... I want to be a writer, I'm very interested in history and I'm very passionate about reading novels, particularly classics. I partook in a creative writing workshop though out my first year, as well as a book group. I've also joined a local history society and have done work experience in history and educational based work placement.

My A/S Subjects (and predicted grades, seeing as I don't get my actual results for a month or so) are:

-English Literature B
-History (16th and 17th Century) A
-Critical Thinking C
-Textiles (Art) A
-Fine Art B

I have the option to Fast-track (AS and A2 in one year) Politics, and to continue any of the above subjects.

I worked very hard for my grades, and I am prepared to work as hard for my A2's. I'm considering studying Enlgish Literature and History definately for A2, but I may choose either Politics (AS & A2) or continue with an Art subject from my AS year.
I've found a lot of people saying that A2 is 'a lot' harder than AS, but how much is 'a lot'...?!
What is the work load like generally in A2 compared to AS? Has anyone taken OCR English Literature, or AQA History A Levels' before - and from your experience how much more work was this for you? Would you recommend fast tracking a politics, given I have two other demanding acedemic subjects to study for?

Question #8:

How important would you concider an English based degree is to becoming a writer?

I am 17 years old and I have just completed my first year at college in the UK, and so I have to start applying for universities now, and I'm at a loss of what subject(s) to study to become a writer... I'm very interested in history and I am concidering a degree in this, but euqally I'm very passionate about reading and studying novels, particularly classics.

I have been advised to take a history degree, and use my writing on the side, but I'm afraid I may not have as much time for it as I would like; Overall, I would love to write full time, but I'm afraid I'm not good enough / can't make a sutible income to support myself.

Would it be better if I took a history degree, and wrote alongside whatever job I have post-degree? Or should I jump into the creative writing and/or english degree option and try my hardest to succeed?

Please comment a suggestion!

Question #11:

My Summer is going to SUCK?

Im 14 years on and i just started my first day of work with a summer youth program and it sucks. Im writing with this creative arts workshop and this whole summer we will be painting morals and other stuff. When i went there today the place was dirty, there was broken glass on the floor and bum's sitting in the park with us and the sun was burning hot. I am not creative at all so this is not my cup of tea. I really wanted a job in a office or daycare not this. I want to quiet but i also want some new clothes. I left early to day cause they wanted me and this other girls to walk 10 blocks up to pack up paint, so i will only be paid for 4 hours today which is only 7.15 dollars a hour. I don't know what to do? Do you think i should go to work tomorrow? Since im going to be painting, what should i wear (they gave us t shirts with the company name on it , so like pants only) and how should i do my hair? It was just a bad day today and was so hot. I really don't know what to do. My hair is brown and long to the middle of my back and i have a bang by the way. Help Please
Also i have to cross the highway in order to get to the park...i don't wanna die lol

Question #12:

What are good creative writing exercises for elementary school kids?

I just found out that for the next few weeks, I'm going to be working at a summer school camp for kids in grades 2 through 4.
As a college student majoring in creative writing, they asked me to run a CW workshop for the kids.
What are some simple exercises that will appeal to all of them? There are some exercises that the littler ones would love, but the older kids would find too easy and boring. But other things would be just the opposite.

Question #13:

Creative Writing Camps Near PA?

im looking for a serious camp or workshop of creative writing for high school students near the pennsylvania region. suggestions please!

Question #14:

Should I, or do I need to go back to school to become a freelance writer?

Succumbing to my mundane existence, I find my self day dreaming about becoming a writer on almost a daily basis. There are however a few things holding me back. As well as a few choices that are hard to make. Do I need to go back to school? That is the choice most heavily debated between me and my spouse.

She argues that with hard work and dedication I would not need to sink more money into a college program. I however am not comfortable enough with my grammar or my ability to write for that matter. I have no doubt that I'm creative enough.

My college background is that of a technical trade school. I didn't go to a normal 4 year college. I regret this choice. Mostly because it means I didn't get the college English and writing that would have initially helped me, and because I owe them 30k. Not to mention my wife still owes about 20k of her own. I would really like to avoid more debt.

So, I guess what I'm asking is, how important is the degree to become a free lance novelist? Would I be better off going back to school earning a degree in English and History (I really want to write history based fiction). Or could I get away with taking some college courses online in English, and joining some kind of creative writing workshops. Or perhaps taking classes for creative writing online as well.

As you can see I'm never at loss for words. I can't even keep a simple question short. :)

The last road block is my age. I'm 30 years old and taking on a new direction in life is very daunting to me. Especially a change that involves perhaps years of hard work and dedication, without seeing a return on investment instantly.

Question #15:

Creative writing courses/workshops in Waterford,Ireland?

I'm going to stay in Waterford, Ireland from the 16th of June till the 11th of July in WIT summer school. I want to know is there any place I can attend creative writing workshops or courses? or somewhere to assist new writers of fiction and poetry??? even if it was in Cork or somewhere close to Waterford?!

Question #16:

How can I improve my drawing ability (pics inside)?

I've always loved art, since I was very little. As a child I was always engrossed in this fantasy world I created in my head that I called my own. I liked the idea of being able to draw what my mind could see, but I was never really good at it. In my early teens I took creative writing classes thinking that if art may be too hard for me to express my feelings and dreams, I would paint a picture in the reader's mind without an actual canvas. I dropped the idea of being a writer after I realized that the way people saw the scenes I created in my stories were completely different to how I saw them. I wanted people to see these worlds and characters in my head the way I saw them, so after three years of writing I decided I'd rather go back to art. (Mainly I aspire to be an illustrator one day, but all forms of art intrigue me). I have a few questions:

- If I take regular art classes at a workshop (or private), what sort of things will I be taught? Or would I be better off practicing from books?

Second thing: Based on my drawings now, what stands out to you most and what doesn't, that I should improve? Thanks in advance.

Mostly my drawings have this surrealistic, dream-ish style about them because they are inspired from my own dreams. I do try and vary style though.

Question #17:

Is this sentence grammatically sound?

"As the backstory of the clawed mutant Wolverine unfolds, the viewers’ eyes and hearts embark on a roller coaster ride skillfully orchestrated by director Gavin Hood."

I'm crafting a movie review for a creative writing workshop, and I'm feeling queasy about the verbs in this sentence. "Unfolds" and "embark" are in the present tense, but "orchestrated" is obviously in the past tense. Is it alright to combine both tenses in this sentence? If not, what can I do to revise it?

Thank you.

Question #18:

Do you know of good online writing courses?

I am looking for options in taking an online writing course for fiction/creative writing. Note that I do not want to take college courses towards a full degree, just a course that is more of a "workshop", or maybe even towards a certificate or something, but really just to improve my writing skills.

I have seen many that really range in cost. In particular there is the Gotham Writers Workshop, which I've seen advertised for years, but the cost seems a bit high.

PLEASE provide your experiences if you have ever taken any! THANKS

Question #19:

Writers - Benefits of formal college writing degrees?

My question is for experienced writers, especially those who have a degree in creative writing or something similiar.

Writing is my hobby which I truly enjoy, but I have never had anything published to date so I state that I am a true novice. However, I am at a point where I would like to delve further into the world of writing, with the hopes of becoming published one day.

I see various, expensive programs for Masters Degrees in Writing (MFA degrees). My undergrad is in business, so while I am educated, my former courses have not been writing-oriented.

To pursue my dream, I write as much as possible. But I see options, such as these Masters Degree programs in writing, and I wonder, can they really make a difference? I am close enough to many colleges that offer such programs, including Emerson College in Boston which has a strong program.

My first question is, is it worth it? It's expensive, but can it really make a difference as opposed to not going; i.e. can they teach you things and get you the connections that you likely won't get anywhere else?

Also, my undergrad is not in English or a more applicable field - would this be a hinderance, and is obtaining an undergrad in English first possibly a better idea?

Lastly, I wonder if it could be a waste of money, in that I may get similiar information from the books I have read on writing, etc., and there is always opportunity to take short writing workshops....

Tough call, but I would love to hear from those with experience in this area.

Question #20:

Which university is better for creative writing? UCLA or The University of Iowa?

I heard that Iowa's writers workshop is one of the best in the world, but I heard UCLA isn't that bad either. I'm serious about becoming a novelist and a poet, and I'm having trouble deciding on which college to transfer to. Any suggestions?
