Creative Writing - creative writing masters Questions

Question #1:

Australians, could you give an opinion about this?

I am a European (from Portugal), and I am planning to attend a Master's degree in Australia.

With this choice, I intend to mix business with pleasure, as I can't find "Creative Writing" degrees at Portuguese universities, and my dream destination has always been Australia.

I've done some research in this regard, and the best options seem to be the University of Sydney and the University of Adelaide.

The issue is that the University of Sydney offers a 1 year degree for 22,320 dollars, and the University of Adelaide offers a 2 year degree for 30,120 dollars.

My dilemna is that on one hand, the course offered by University of Adelaide seems cheaper and might be a little more solid, but on the other hand, I would prefer to go to Sydney.

So, please help me decide.

What would you recommend to me?

Question #3:

What do you think of this character?

I'm working on creating a character with these traits. How does this woman seem to you? She's an upper middle class woman in her 20s.

Elegant
Good-looking
Demure, but strong
Leader and loyal supporter (She is the well-respected assistant to an executive of a large company and the owner of a small side firm.)
Merciful
Loves to make others happy
Creative (Artist and Musician)
Treasures the simple things like a walk through the city/park or relaxing on the beach most of all
Adores composing on the piano
Adores stuffed animals
Dresses only in gray, black, white, pink, red, gold, brown, or silver.
Her house is all black, white, silver, and gray outside and in.
Has 2 white German Shepherds named "Kibo" and "Shiro"
Strives to be a person of Integrity
Educated in a wide variety of things (Sciences, Mathematics, Literature, Art Critique, Languages... etc.)
Up-to-date on the most current events
Politically conservative, but open to considering and debating other options
Swayed primarily by reason, but greatly influenced by pity (She can't say no to a friend that needs her, so she often stretches herself thin)
Knows Etiquette
Can throw a variety of parties (From a Superbowl party to a business fundraiser)
Can function just as well at an elegant dinner as at a basketball game
Doesn't mind getting dirty every once in a while (I mean gardening, hiking, maybe a mud fight, camping, etc.)
Likes playing sports
Is usually up for trying something new as she loves to expand her knowledge base and experience base.
Fit
Eats healthy
Knows first aid
Maintains a clean environment
Can cook a wide variety of items
Enjoys adventure and also just staying at home watching a movie by a fire
Fashionable
Frugal, while getting quality items
Good with money
Tactful
Quick to compliment

As every character needs a weakness or two, one of hers is competition. If someone challenges her to do something, she can't let it go until she accomplishes it. Her other is men. She wants to get married, but always after she accomplishes her "next big project". Like learning a new language or mastering a new skill, so relationships are a section of life she is clueless about.

Her greatest fear is failure and her greatest joy is success.

So, thoughts? I've never really written a book before... She is the story's protagonist.

If you were to sum up her goal in life in one statement, it is "To Be the Perfect Woman". (Not that she believes perfection exists, for that would be boring and make her unattractive to others which defeats perfection being true perfection in the first place. So, she aims for a "social perfection". She doesn't even believe she could become perfect, but rather with each day she does her best, she gets a little closer. Sort of like the mathematical functions where the curve approaches a number, but never gets there.)

Any feedback would be much appreciated!
I'm thinking I'll make this like a comic, but not... perhaps in a manga form?

Question #4:

Seeking Creative Writing Recommendation for MFA Writing Program.?

Hi. It's been over 10 years since I first took my last English Literature course back in College. I'm now looking to applying to a graduate program in Creative Writing. Problem is, I need some recommendations, but currently don't have any. I'm considering requesting my English Literature professor for a recommendation, but I haven't spoken to her in eons. How should I approach her for a recommendation for a MFA (Masters in Fine Arts) in Creative Writing Program? Should I just call her for an appointment and show her my writing samples, then see if I get a recommendation from her?

Thanks.

Question #5:

my numerology reading?

could someone explain this to me.

NAME: Kevin Alexander Simpson
DATE OF BIRTH: 14 October 1994

Your Life Path Number is 11
Your Life Path Number represents the path you should take through life and the talents and skills you have to make your journey a rewarding one.

You have the Master Number 11 as your Life Path Number. Master Numbers indicate nearly complete or complete development of the traits associated with the number they would reduce to. This relation is usually expressed by writing the Master Number and the number it reduces to together. Master Number 11 is often written 11/2
Freedom and responsibility come with having a Master Number. You have the freedom to choose whether to allow your Master Number traits to express themselves or not. If you opt to act responsibly and use your lofty powers, you will find your reward is in the choice itself. If you choose to ignore your talents, you may find yourself taking more than one step back. You may incur a Karmic Debt.
Much is expected of those carrying an 11 Life Path Number. Yours is the journey of the Spiritual Messenger. You are meant to explore and come to understand life's spiritual mysteries. As your wisdom grows, you will share your vision with all of humankind.

Your Life Destiny Number is 7
Your Destiny Number sheds light on those things you must accomplish in your life to be fulfilled.

A 7's destiny is to pursue the truth behind everything and to seek inner-knowledge. This pursuit may often leave you isolated from most of those around you. Indeed, you may seek isolation. Your mission is to uncover wisdom and truth in all its forms. In time, you will be called upon to share your knowledge and wisdom with the rest of us.

Your Soul Number is 5
Your Soul Number describes your deepest desires and dreams and the person you truly want to be.

Your Lucky Number is 7
Your Personal Lucky Number does not change. This number will be lucky for you your entire life. Your luck derived from this number will be strongest when you are addressing events and issues related to the general meaning of the number. Lucky Numbers should not be relied on to constantly produce positive results, or make impulsive, high risk gambles. They simply mean that where they appear you have an edge. How large an edge is impossible to determine, but seems to increase with the number of occurrences your Lucky Number is be associated with a given event or issue.

Those with a Personal Lucky Number 7 have a rather lofty number on their side. Your 7 may be very lucky in any situation. However, 7 is the number of those seeking spiritual growth, so often the luck of the 7 is not very easy to see. Its force comes into play on a true cosmic level and may be beyond yours or anyone’s means to identify.

This number is most influential between your 28th and 56th year. While it is not the most important number in your profile, it does have an effect on your Life's Path and Destiny.

Question #10:

I'm considering taking the GRE as a way to improve my chances of getting into a competitive graduate school. The schools I've looked at so far include CU at Boulder, UW at Seattle, and UO at Cincinnati. I plan on earning a Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Is this something worth pursuing?

Question #11:

Will this be ok for my homework? (creative writing - poem)...?

Right, so I've just started college and in my classics class we've just been given our first piece of homework: to writing a foreign observation report in any format that includes a description of Rome in some way between 80 and 40BC. I decided to write a poem - all of it is based on class notes so it's accurate. Please tell me if you think this will be ok?

(Sorry it's long but it's quick and easy to read so please bare with me)

A skeletal graveyard,
Conquests of Rome.
Their mighty rivals
Diminished to
Ruined houses and
Abandoned towns.
Flags still fly
The celebrated names
Of the beaten.
Their inhabitants
Could not
Resist
Rome's clutching hands
Their gravitational force
Sucking you dry.
My home, at least
Too far, is safe
I am stranger to these lands
Looking on at the unfriendly haze
Drawing ever closer
To wary eyes.
It is heard so often
Unreal tales of archaic destruction
A reality in this stone and grass country.

In my litter
Hiding from the stench
I spy the walking dead
In their makeshift tombs
Lying in their mud beds
Waiting
For the black tide.
Funny,
I think
Furthest from the heart of Rome
Are its own blood
And closer still
The tombs
In eternal comfort
Set in stone
Fanned by cyprus'
Frittering in wafts of cassia and myrrh
Dying the death of luxury
Better than my family live
In that Grecian town .

The mouth of Rome
A great gate
Throwing me into the
Torrent of life
A writhing mass of
Flawed saints
Flooding the streets
With their calls of
Bargains
And cut prices.
A casual splatter of buildings
In their disarray.
I expect more from the
Heart of the
World.
I stand in this swirling congestion
My feet implanted in dirt
Yet I wonder where I have left them
As familiar sights pass by
In a muddle of mules
And heated apprentices.
I stumble through the throng
As wailing tear-whores
Sing songs of sadistic pleasure
In my ears
Their money-painted faces
Distraught with greed
As they show off
Fake sadness for a much missed stranger.
I myself cannot see
The honour
In paid flattery
In the absence
Of whose
Who cared?

As I ask a person
Face a canvas in the crowd of vultures
Features I will never know again
I ask him
Where I can find a bed
In this unsleeping city?
In a word ejaculation
His voice flies by my ears
As he points to various hills
And is gone
By the time I turn to thank him.
Passed through the line
Like a factory part
I discover the ranking in heights
Each hill a home
For a specific income.
As a well respected Greek
I expect to sleep comfortably
Yet every finger points
To the towering apartments
Made from the greed of dismissive hands
And the stone
So untidily thrown together Into a "home"
And as I stand
In awe of the mighty mess
I hear the sound
Before I see the slide
And the crumble
Of a sky-high slum
Falling back into dirt
Where it belongs
And bringing with it
The lives of those
Who did not check for cracks.

In my clean attire
With my oil soaked skin
I trust the exploiting mind
Of a wealthy roman
As I make my way
To the Caelian hill.
Eyes inspect my leather sandals
And my dewy skin
With appreciation
And coins jingle inconspicuously
In gravitational wallets.
"A dinner, my friend?"
"A bed to sleep?"
My telling smile
Accepts the offer
My experienced mind
Bloats with a smug air
As I think of the people
Fallen to mud and fire
Because they didn't think as I did
To test the greed of a new money Roman.
A grand house
Made form the hands of slaves
And the pockets of the previous occupants
Of my seat
Who were not so careful.
Fish to the table and
Smiles to the stranger
Wrongly thinking they can fool
They offer me the bejewelled fish
With the finest stones.
I take and eat
As they ask of my daughter
Back in the cradle of the gods
And of her contracts to marriage
That do not exist.

Fine clothed master of the house
Asks if I appreciate such
Abundant hospitality
I do, I say
Very much so
But I regret
I must leave tomorrow
My business in the city is short lived
And my daughter awaits her father
Perhaps I will return one day
And share some more wine and vomit?
A hand on my shoulder
A brisk eye to my eye
He tells me that I cannot leave
Until I have appreciated this city
And have seen the temples and shrines
And the Palatine hill.
Alas, it cannot be done
Another life, perhaps.
But of my home, they ask
May they keep me In their calling?
Of course, there is no
Suspicion
In written tongue.

In a hasty rush
I leave this city and
Flee for Greece
And a waiting family
But returning
A waiting stranger, as well
Demanding my daughter
As a payment for jewels
To be a servant wife
To a homosexual Roman.
My careless hand
Had painted my agreement
On the scroll of
On the scroll of his left hand
And the knife at my throat
Willed me to allow
The theft of a daughter
Which I cannot prevent.
In a boomerang
Of cunning wit
I must now return to the brutal city
If I ever again wish
To see my child
In doing so
I will again owe to them
Another piece of my life
As is the mind
Of a Roman
Oriented.
About it being "WAY too long"...

have you read the Odyssey? That's a poem... and it's the size of a novel...

I need to fit the same amount of information in that I would put in a short story, if it was normal poem length I would get an E and it would have the most vague description of ancient Rome imaginable. Now, that's hardly a foreign observational review is it?

Question #12:

Is this ok for my creative writing assignment?

Right - I'm taking classical civilizations which is a study of ancient Rome and Greece. We've just started this course and this is our first homework - a foreign observation report in any format that includes a description of Rome - 80 to 40BC.

I decided to write a poem - please tell me if you think it's ok and how to improve it:

(Sorry it's very very long - but such was necessary)

A skeletal graveyard,
Conquests of Rome.
Their mighty rivals
Diminished to
Ruined houses and
Abandoned towns.
Flags still fly
The celebrated names
Of the beaten.

Yep, it's all factual. I missed out a lot of stuff like I probably should have written about the temples and the Palatine hill etc... But I didn't want it to be much longer than it was.

Question #13:

Help choosing school clubs...?

Alright. I'm a freshman in high school this year, and I'm always hearing that it's really great to get involved with clubs. Problem is, I can't choose! I don't do any sports that would interfere, but I am an honors and AP student, so I get a lot of homework, which is my primary obligation. So, I feel that three (maybe four if I really can't decide) clubs (each once a week) would be sufficient. I already know two of the clubs that I'm going to take (guitar club and sign language), but I have 8 that I can't choose from. Help me out?

ASTRONOMY CLUB: Learn about stars and constellations
BETA CLUB: Service honors society for students who commit to helping others
CHESS CLUB: Students learn the basics of chess or master strategic moves while playing against other students and faculty in tournaments.
EURO CHALLENGE: Academic challenge team that focuses on current events and history
OUTDOOR EDUCATION CLUB: Promotes and encourages the management and conservation of our natural resources by working on service projects and taking adventurous trips in the outdoors.
PROLOGUE: Student members create the art and literary magazine, Prologue, while working on creative writing and editing skills.
SPANISH CLUB: Club members learn about language and culture through social activities.
WOOD TECHNOLOGY CLUB: The Wood Tech Club is open to all students of all abilities. The club provides students an opportunity to explore woodworking techniques beyond the basic school curriculum.

Question #14:

My question requires reading a somewhat long piece of writing. Its an artists manifesto....?

I was hoping you could help me understand the meaning of this "manifesto". Its taken from an art gallery in Denmark.
It was both in English and danish.
Thanks in advance for taking the time and effort to read this.

--------------------------------------…
In the "end" each individual must become a teacher unto himself.

So "masters", teachers, or institutions can only help to a certain extent.

Each individual person must find out for himself how to proceed and take his own steps in order for him to make any real progress towards his unique "spiritual" path and understanding. An understanding of himself and of existence.

No master, teacher or institution can ever guide you in the exact way you need to walk in order to reach your own source, the source, which has for one thing a common ground connecting all things and people, but at the same time is only manifested in the uniqueness of an individual. Thus, only being accessible and known to each individual by his own unique "path" and understanding.
This is mysticism. Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, etc. were all mystics.Which trough one way or the other elevated their minds beyond the conditioned everyday rationale, into where pure creativity, were all mystical experiences originates.

Support, advice and understandings by others are necessary, but they can only take you so far before they start to become a hindrance to your own evolution, a dependency on dead knowledge/memory, empty rituals, traditions and others. A child and mother like relationship starts to emerge, and we start to loose our spiritual path ans strength, we instead start to regress towards the womb. Which is best expressed and seen as fear and the dependency which fear creates in people. Look at marriage, at religions, look at political parties and their followers, nationalism, governments, etc.
Look closely and see for yourself that mother-child relationship and how it not only cripples people in turning them into easy to control subjects, but also how this form their soul, their spiritual and creative lives.
e.g. We find our love and relationship for our partner only truly valid once we marry. Only until some body of authority(the church, the state) recognizes and accepts our love for each other by legally binding us. Disgusting! Another way to get stuck and more involved within the system.
There comes a time when one must truly stand alone in order to reach that source which is shared by all things, and yet unique in its expression to the individual. There is a source.

----------

That is the difference between Religion and Mysticism.

Religions rely on institutional structures to induce a kind of trance in the individual, a conditioned mental state which relies on dead knowledge/memory to exist, on repetitive indoctrination so as to create a safe and comfortable “mental map” of our existence and so being able to perpetuate manipulative teachings and sell "enlightenment." It creates dependency in people and creates conditions which are ideal for exploiting people, in creating order.

Also religions provide the very opposite of what they claims to provide: understanding of self and existential revelations. It does this by making people rely on dogma and integrate pre-packaged systems which actually work by taking you away from yourself(denial), true awareness, and instead creates filters by which ones perceptions are screened through, before any true observation is made.

It takes your attention away from yourself and your immediate situation, and keeps you busy with scriptures, future goals and situations to look forward to, created fear which leaves one craving foe the womb and techniques which are created as models for spiritual and creative progress, but instead is actually one product/ or system mass-produced for the idea of the masses(a homogenized body of people), to get everyone on the "right" track in the same way.

A perfect tool for organizing a specific order and hierarchy.

Impossible! Lies!
Wake up! You are only controlled to the extent which you let yourself be controlled.

Everything through Religion creates a path, a goal and an answer, which one integrates into ones rationale an from there on, its system starts to operate on a subconscious level.

Religions came from those “everyday”- functional minds trying to make sence of the mystics words. But not realizing that such words are unique to the individual and his insight and cannot be taught or communicated in any meaningful way, except as an introduction to that there is something more than what are minds are original brought up by. One must live it himself before he can even begin to truly understand the words. Therefore religions are always corrupted at their core by the weaknesses of the survival/primitive man, who's supposed spiritualism is nothing but everyday survival mechanisms and satisfaction of a limited egos.
Religions mask their real function in a cloud of abstract concepts which serve the same ends as the two-bit hustler out in the street.

---------------------

Mysticism works as explained above. It shows you that being human has countless similarities to everybody else, but that also each person has a uniqueness unto himself. This uniqueness which once starts to truly be discovered, leads one also to the source of creativity(manifested as ones own unique expressions). Which is also the key to "spiritual/creative" becoming. This common ground is also a part of that which connects us, a "heavy transparent coat" that exists as itself, and also as a manifestation of all things. It is that from which all things have their origins, genesis, and is the source of our/your creativity. This "coat" although elemental and ubiquitous, seems to be only directly accessed through altered mental states.
This “coat” i.e. Not the physical manifestation we know as matter, but the aspect which is more elemental and fluid(heavy transparent coat), can be felt and and accessed so to be able to work with it. To flow with it, and at the same time re-direct its flow and mould, shape and channel it through ones unique expressions(creations which are both something physical like an artefact, and also on a mental plane like how one creates ones identity). This is called Art and mysticism.
By truly throwing oneself off of the edge and getting lost, exploring, experimenting, and living intensely so as to never crave for the womb again, to never sleep again, is to be an Artist and mystic.

The "last" few steps are always taken on ones own.

Question #15:

How to indicate career change (from environmental to entertainment) when applying for jobs?

I have a masters degree from Harvard in environmental sciences and I really dont want to work in this field anymore. At least not directly. Most of my experience is related to sustainability and remediation and environmental policy as well as envrionmental health sciences and I just dont wanna do it anymore. It is dull and boring. I want a career in the entertainment industry in either PR, communications, marketing, writing, producing....I am an excellent writer and if you can promote environmental issues, you can promote anything.

I am really into the movie industry and I know just a lot about it, but I dont have any formal training in it or any experience.

My main question is, when I do find a job in PR that i wanna apply to...how should I go about indicating my desire to change careers in the cover letter? How do I explain my desire to apply for a position ,given my totally different background ? Do I just flat out say I am looking to change tracks? That I want to change my career path? What exactly do I say? I mean there must be people out there who do that right? Changing careers. I just graduated so it is not like i am all settled in my ways. But how do I bring that across? I really need to get away from what I am doing and i really love the eterntainment world, and writing and the creative process.

Question #16:

ATTENTION: my question requires reading a somewhat long piece of writing. English is not my mother tongue....?

P.S. this is taken from a Danish artists manifesto given to me at his art gallery exhibition from early on in 2009.
It was written in English and Danish.

I am having trouble understanding what this means.
If you have the time and interested to read this and help me understand it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

There comes a time when one must truly stand alone in order to reach that source which is shared by all things, and yet unique in its expression to the individual.

----------

That is the difference between Religion and Mysticism.

Religions rely on institutional structures to induce a kind of trance in the individual, a conditioned mental state which rely on dead knowledge/memory to exist, teach and sell "enlightenment." It creates dependency in people and creates conditions which are ideal for exploiting people.

Also it provides the very opposite of what it claims to provide: and understanding/revelations. It does this by making people rely on dogma and integrate pre-packaged systems which actually work by taking you away from true awareness, and instead creates filters by which ones perceptions are screened through first, before any true observation is made.

It takes your attention away from yourself and your immediate situation, and keeps you busy with scriptures and techniques which are created as models for spiritual and creative progress, but instead they are one product/system mass-produced to get everyone on the "right" track in the same way.

Impossible! Lies!

A perfect tool for organizing a specific order and hierarchy.

Everything through Religion creates a path, a goal and an answer, which one integrates into ones rationale an from there on its system starts to operate on a subconscious level.

---------------------

Mysticism works as the former explanation shows. It shows you that being a human has countless similarities to everybody else, but that also each person has uniqueness unto himself. This uniqueness which once starts to truly be discovered, leads one also to the source of creativity(manifested as ones own unique expressions). Which is also the key to "spiritual/creative" becoming. This common ground is also a part of that which connects us, this "heavy transparent coat" that exists as itself and also as a manifestation of all things, It is that which all things have their origins, and is the source of our/your creativity. This "coat" although elemental and ubiquitous, seems to be only directly accessed, as in being aware, feeling and being able to work with it, so as to flow with it, and at the same time re-direct its flow and mould, shape and channel it through ones unique expressions(creations which are both seen as something physical like an artefact, and also on a mental plane like how one creates ones identity). This is Art.
By truly throwing oneself off of the edge and getting lost into things, exploring, experimenting, and living intensely so you can not fall asleep.

The "last" few steps are always taken on your own.

Question #20:

Not sure about my college major...?

I'm about to enter my junior year of college. My major right now is declared as Communications but I'm still uncertain about it!! I want to be a writer (specifically, published author (fiction)) but I am uncertain about having a major in creative writing and what I could do with it. I chose communications because I am also good with people and I have leadership skills. I want to use those idealistically in a career. I also would like to work for a book publishing company, especially. But I still want to write.I guess you can say I'm confused. Right now, I am majoring in communications, with a minor in writing. I also have long term plans on going for my masters in creative writing. Should I just stick to this path??

Any advice?
