Question #5:Do I have a chance at getting into Boston University?I really would like to go to college at BU next fall, although I've heard it's very competitive. I'm curious if I have a shot at getting in or not, so any BU students, alumni, or college admissions people (or anyone with a decent understanding of the school/college admissions) should help.-I have approx a 3.8 GPA -I got a 23 composite score on the ACT (but I'm retaking it) -I have a 1580 composite score on the SAT (retaking that as well) -I've taken AP US History, Accelerated Sophomore and Junior English -Credit wise I have 3 science (Physical Science, Bio, Chem), 4 English, 4 history, 3 math (Alg 1, Geometry, Alg 2; my last math class being summer after sophomore year..), 1.5 PE, .5 Health -Electives include 3.5 credits of French, 1.5 Latin, 1 Chinese, .5 Photography, .5 Business & Personal Law, 1 Web Design, .5 Journalism, 3.5 Band, 1 Performing Arts, .5 Creative Foods, .5 Creative Writing, and .5 Psychology -Extracurriculars: 9- Fastpitch softball spring & summer season, journalism, French Club; 10- Track, softball summer season, JCL, pep band; 11- French Club, JCL; 12- French Club, Art Club, Environmental Club, -I spent my second semester Junior year on a 6 month foreign exchange program in France -I'm secretary of Art Club -I've been in band ensemble competition; I also participated in a couple small activities through theatre (lip sync contest and production of comedy sketches). -Jobs: tutored sophomore year; worked at a ballpark for a week during the summer before senior year -I'm active at my church and went on a 2 week mission trip to Peru the summer after my Sophomore year. I think that's about it.. I regret not taking another math class and I hope that doesn't hold me back like my parents think it will. I also regret not having taken part in many leadership roles, and I think it would probably look better if I'd have taken more AP classes.. but I'm hoping I might still have a chance. What do you guys think? I forgot to mention my class rank, which is 52 out of approx. 465. Question #6:Am I like a major insane psyco freak? I'm like, obsessed with suicide...?I'm not suicidal. I would never kill myself. No, I wouldn't ever do that, but I just like to imagine myself doing it...Like, when I was at the school pep rally today, I was getting kind of bored, and I started day dreaming. I day dreamed that I walked up to the top of the bleachers, busted the window, walked out onto the top of the school's roof, and shot myself. Then I day dreamed again, and it was the same, only I jumped instead of a gun. Next I imagined it with pills. I didn't even realise what I was thinking about untill I kind of 'woke up' and got my mind back on the pep rally.I love reading about suicide, stories, especially true ones. I imagine what it would be like to kill myself, what it would be like if my best friends killed themselves, if my mom did, if anyone did. And whenever I hear about a suicide in the news, I go online and research it. It's really really interesting. My mom has caught me doing this a couplet times, and she said I should stop, it would make me morbid. Haha, too late for that..... Anyways...the most important part is writing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE to write about suicide. Charcters, in first person that kill themselves, characters in third person that kill themselves, characters that no people who kill themselves. And the stories are actually pretty good. I mean, I've won awards. Im not allowed to write about that at school, but I have done creative writing contests and such outside of school. It's amazingly fun. I also write poems and songs about suicide. I play guitar and piano, and so I can put them to music too. I've got a poem published before. Does that make me..... Weird? Strange? Creepy? Insane? I don't know. But some people are obsessed with sports, some with animals or art. Why not suicide? Why not? Just thought I'd add this: Fot the millionth time, I AM NOT SUICIDAL and I do NOT think suicide is a good thing in any way!!!! I actually think it is very sad and a horrible way to die; but, I still am interested in it, and I can't help that. And to the religious person at the bettom: You obviously didn't read my question. You should consider actually reading before you answer next time. I'm not going to kill myself. I'm not suicidal. Or anything even close to it. I'm not even depressed!!! SO...yeah. Just...chill. Ok? Ok. Question #7:Where can an amateur poet submit work for publishing?I'm eighteen and living in Toronto, ON Canada at the time being. I've won a few creative writing contests at my school, but I've never pursued writing farther than that, and I'd like that to change. So my question is what are some magazines, papers and/or contests that I can enter to start building a name for myself? Question #8:I really need an important speech idea please?I have to write a speech but it has to speak to children under the age of 12. It is a contest the winner gets a big trophy. ( i am not a geek lol i am doing this for the big trophy and the 100 dollar cash prize :D) I need a speech idea, there are 50 other people competing with me and i overheard some of their ideas wich i can't copythe importance of homwork drugs under the age of 14 how you shouldnt dress in revealing clothes i need somthing creative Question #9:Do you see any problem with 0bama’s Buffy Wicks?(Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement [)( Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, Christina M. Tchen Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, Michael Strautmanis, Chief of Staff to the Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Relations and Public Engagement, Brian Bond, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, Buffy Wicks Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement]) is engaging taxpayer-funded NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) for pro 0bama art to push his agenda?EXPLOSIVE NEW AUDIO Reveals White House Using NEA to Push Partisan Agenda by Patrick Courrielche **NEA conference call full audio and transcript here** Should the National Endowment for the Arts encourage artists to create art on issues being vehemently debated nationally? That is the question that I set out to discuss a little over three weeks ago when I wrote an article on Big Hollywood entitled The National Endowment for the Art of Persuasion?” The question still requires debate but the facts do not. The NEA and the White House did encourage a handpicked, pro-Obama arts group to address politically controversial issues under contentious national debate. That fact is irrefutable. President Obama with the NEA’s Yosi Sergant But some have claimed that the invite and passages, pulled from the conference call that inspired the article, were taken out of context. Context is what I intend to establish here. On August 10th, the National Endowment for the Arts, the White House Office of Public Engagement, and the Corporation for National and Community Service hosted a conference call with a handpicked arts group. This arts group played a key role in Obama’s arts effort during his election campaign, as declared by the organizers of the call, and many on the call played a role in the now famous Obama Hope poster. Much of the talk on the conference call was a build up to what the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) was specifically asking of this group. In the following segment, Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, clearly identifies this arts group as a pro-Obama collective and warns them of some “specific asks” that will be delivered later in the meeting. Buffy Wicks Play Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement: • “I just first of all want to thank everyone for being on the call and just a deep deep appreciation for all the work you all put into the campaign for the 2+ years we all worked together.” •“We won.” •“I’m actually in the White House and working towards furthering this agenda, this very aggressive agenda.” •“We’re going to come at you with some specific asks here.” •“I hope you guys are ready.” Later in the call, “specific asks” were delivered by Yosi Sergant, then Communications Director of the National Endowment for the Arts. What were the “asks”? They were for this pro-Obama arts group to create art on several hotly debated political issues, including health care: Yosi Sergant Play Yosi Sergant, former Communications Director of the National Endowment for the Arts: • “I would encourage you to pick something, whether it’s health care, education, the environment, you know, there’s four key areas that the corporation has identified as the areas of service.” •“And then my ask would be to apply artistic, you know, your artistic creative communities utilities and bring them to the table.” •“Again, I’m really, really honored to be working with you; the National Endowment for the Arts is really honored.” •“You’re going to see a lot more of us in the next four and hopefully eight years.” As someone that has been creating arts initiatives and marketing campaigns for over 14 years, I feel like I have a good sense as to how a pro-Obama arts group, when requested by the NEA to address politically contentious issues, could so easily turn very partisan. Consider: Three days after the conference call a coalition of arts groups, led by Americans for the Arts, a participant on the conference call per the meeting contact list and recipient of NEA grants, sent out a press release with the heading “Urgent Call to Congress for Healthcare Reform,” which called for the creation of “a health care reform bill that will create a public health insurance option.” Eleven days after the conference call, Rock the Vote, another participant on the call, announced a health care design contest. “We can’t stand by and listen to lies and deceit coming from those who are against reforming a broken system,” they stated in their announcement. “Enough is Enough. We need designs that tell the country YES WE CARE! Young people demand health care.” These may both be coincidences and I am not suggesting that the NEA or these groups definitiv Question #10:Please give your honest opinion, Would you read this? Please give me your HONEST opinion. I am entered in a creative writing contest and entered in the category of Short Story. This is a small excerpt from my story titled Sunset. Please just rate the story and don't add to it, All of the work must be the original work of a student. (BTW: this is set somewhat in the future, year 3251) Thank you!:DAt dawn, I saw HOV-cars puling into our drive way and wondered if they were from the FBI, too, since they were all black. I glanced out of my window, trying to see the government insignia on the doors. There wasn't one. I don't know what I was thinking. I ran downstairs, against my better judgment, and went strait to Mom and Dads room. They were already awake and moving around the room. My mom saw me enter and looked up frantically as my dad was opening our wall-sized gun safe. She came over to me and told me to hide. "But what about Adeline and Erik and Justin? Are they hiding too?" Mom didn't answer;she jsut shooed me out of her room left me to find a hiding place. I went behind the large shelf, in the living room, that held our pictures, heirlooms, and Tv screen. I made it behind there and managed to duck just as the door was kicked in. I peeked from where I hid and saw their shinnkng eyes in the morning light. Chromes. That must be what Mom and Dad where talking about last night. I could see from the Tv that they had plasma rifles. The United States outlawed them because they could cause so many problems if not cleaned after every use. The next thing i saw was two Chromes brandishing a dart gun with a magazine sticking from the bottom. Are they taking prisoners? I sucked in my breath so my ragged breathing wouldn't alert them. I heard the echo of the bullet being fired before I saw the lead Chrome fall to the oriental rug that Mom had tried to keep clean over the years. Blood polled from his chest. The Chrome with the dart gun fired twice and seconds later I heard two thuds come from the hallway. Two of retrieved both of my parents. THen I saw each of my siblings being carried from downstairs; all of them were unconcience. I didn't even hear them go upstairs. They were laid on the rug where the dead Chrome was. I started to feel dizzy and realized that I had been holding my breath this whole time. I exhaled carefully, trying to choke back tears. Each of them was in Trines, small silver cords that looked like string, but were made of steel, and faced downward. I looked away when they fired bullets from my dads gun into each of their heads. I will probably end up adding more detail. please rate on a scale of 1-10. Question #12:Short story contests for teenagers?I am 14 and would like to enter some creative writing competitions, preferably online, via e-mail.I have typed things into google but it is hard to find things when you don't know where to look. I am looking to have my work read to see if others actually like it or not, you know? Any suggestions apprectiated Question #13:What are some good, reputable contests & publications for teens interested in Creative Writing?I'm 16 years old and an avid writer, but I'm having some trouble finding places to submit stories I've written. I've submitted things to Teen Ink in the past, but since they've added Teen Ink Raw, where readers rather than editors judge submissions, I've stopped sending them there.I've also sent some things to the Claremont Review, but since it's based in Canada and I live in the US, the mail situation is a little bit tricky. So does anyone know of any creative writing contests for teens, preferably with deadlines coming up, or any publications that are openly accepting submissions? Please let me know! I'm hoping for some specific contests or publications that are made for TEENS. I have a writer's market book already, and while it's helpful, it doesn't have a section for teenagers. I want something like Teen Ink, which accepts things from people 13-19 only, since I'm in that age range. Question #14:Writing contests... I'm lost and confused..............?So I've been told time and time again not to pay to enter a writing contest. Even as small of an amount as $8. Okay, fine... Then why do 95% of the contests ask for an entry fee? The most I've seen is $25.I don't mind paying, but I'm not going to if it's a scam or bogus some how. When I search for free contests there are very few. And most are for poetry. I write creative non-fiction short stories. Where does that leave me? Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you. (I don't care about winning a cash prize, although that would be nice. I care more about publication.) Question #15:(Oh god not another) TOP COLLEGE "chance me" question?!?I am a ripe new sophomore in high school; however, I have been keeping college admissions in mind since I was 14.I'll cut to the chase. I'm aiming for top schools. Stanford would be Number 1, followed by Ivies, followed by a couple others I can post on request. Various Important Information: Current GPA (Weighted): 5.1 Current GPA (Unweighted): 3.85 I think? Around an A- average? Scored 98% on state exams in middle school Scored 29-30 (i forgot) on ACT in middle school. Will take ACT again in high school, as well as SAT. I am 100% white. Irish/German. Nothing special racially. Average income, probably not a lot of reason for financial aid even though I don't think we can pay for college. I go to New Trier High School near Chicago. 4 Year Plan (this is required at my school, so it is actually on record and not just what I "hope" or "think I can do") ALL CLASSES are LEVEL 4, besides the obvious like Art and Gym. Level 2 is state average, level 3 is accelerated college prep (kind of like honors I guess? But normal at my school), and level 4 is at college level but does not prepare for AP exam specifically. Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, AP TBD (Bio or Chem) English: English I, English II, AP English III, AP English IV (2 different AP English) Social Studies: World History, Geography, AP US History, AP Psychology, AP Political Science Gym: Requirement Fulfilled Art: Visual Art Studio, Painting and Drawing, Sculpture, AP Art History, AP Art Studio (all are full year courses) Math: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II/College Algebra&Trig, Pre-Calc, AP Calc BC Japanese: Japanese 1, AP Japanese ( I did a lot of self study), Continuing studies/communication practice with tutors and Japanese friends Pass Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 1 before graduation. (aka, language equivalent of a Japanese person entering college) Chinese: This is the shaky subject. I take to languages alarmingly quickly, and was planning on teaching myself basics, take Year 2 in my Junior Year, teach myself some more and enter AP in Senior. Not definite. All in all 11 Ap courses planned. I am sure I can do at least 8 or 9; however, I am pretty sure I can make all of them work with organization and hard work. I also have played piano for 10 years. When I graduate, 13 years. I have played in a few contests, and I may go to an intensive summer arts school to work on my technique and enter a contest to play as a soloist with an international high school orchestra. I have some natural writing ability, so I think with some technique polishing, my essays could be pretty good. I wrote a lot more in middle school, so subsequently, I competed and published my work more back then. I'm not worried about being TOO rusty though. I was a top 10 state science olympiad competitor freshmen year in Physics and Ecology. I don't think I have time to continue with science olympiad to go to nationals. I was a co-head of my school's Global Activism club. I plan on continuing in Model UN and Amnesty International. I may drop in on International Club and Japan Club just for my own fun. Finally, I ranked top 3 when I ran Cross Country, however I quit to focus on studies. I'm unique in a creative way, and in the weird way. I am a self-motivated person (my parents don't care if I go to community college or Harvard). I love learning and challenging myself to my limits. The things I have listed (art, piano, writing, languages, studies) are things that I truly enjoy and want to learn. Oh, and public speaking is fun. It may sound like I'm "full of myself", and maybe I am. However, I'm just a well-trained, overworked college hopeful. I wrote it in such a way that was completely factual, but would show my good side. Of course I have things I suck at and stories I wouldn't care to share just like the rest of the world T_T I really am just a normal person that wants to succeed.... I'm just nervous T_T Amongst my friends I feel stupid sometimes... Sorry.... Question #16:Write A Poem about Global Warming? (contest)?Write anything about global warming you think of! Be creative and express your feelings. Winner will be the most creative and inspiring answer. Good Luck.. You'll Need It;)Question #17:Need help, what should I do?Hi Everyone!I'm a teenager and I love to sing. I don't think I could spend a day without singing and not get all tense and moody, music is what calms me down. About four years ago I started to really sing, I started taking lessons and every since then, I have absolutely loved it. Two years ago, I even started writing my own music and about a year ago, started writing music along with guitar. They're not amazing songs yet but I am getting better. I'm shy with singing in front of people but I've had people tell me that I could be famous and get a record deal with my voice. They say its unique and they love it, which is good right? The thing is, my parents aren't too into the whole music industry thing. I'm actually surprised about my love of music and singing because no one in my family is very creative, they all want/are something to do with business and are extremely realistic. So I know how hard it is to get into the music industry. However, I don't think I'll be truly happy with my life if I spend it sitting behind a desk all day, I need to sing! I know that if I try going into the music industry and look like I have a shot at it, my parents will support me 100% so is there any contests or any way to find my way into the music industry that you guys would recommend? I live nearby NY so if that helps at all..I'm not really sure... Thank you guys!! Question #18:Poem contest # 1...would you like to compete? To anyone who reads my poetry, or even if you never have....SERIOUS POETS ONLY! The theme: What if you and I met? Question #19:Red Cross T-shirt Design Contest!!!?Hey Guys,I need some inspiration for a red cross t-shirt for our school club. I want to make it nice, and really something everyone likes to wear. In the past, they have been so so. SO I wanted to ask you guys for help... Give me ideas for what to write or put on the t-shirt... creative design qualities based of off others. Such as like a splatter paint cross on the shirt... you guys can upload this design on a photo sharing site.. Please make it nice... Some ideas: -retro themed -hand signs What I meant to say was like post the link from where I could get inspiration.... Not like commanding you to give a final design... which also would be nice.. teehee..
